He was a great crosser of the ball though. As has been said - if Wilf was to perform at this level for the rest of this season and maybe next then it would be very difficult not to have him in an All Time Palace XI. He is carrying us at the moment and just needs to score more regularly and then the rest of the football world will be all over him. These threads do make me laugh though - it's like reading Youtube comments when someone says Abba were better than the Beatles!

Then you have IMO the likes of Jim Cannon, Billy Gilbert, Peter Nicholas, Nigel Martyn, Geoff Thomas, Vince Hilaire, Mark Bright, Nathaniel Clyne, Victor Moses etc.. One of personal favourites Jerry Murphy - such a sweet left peg....!! Think Wilf is getting close - but as others have said needs consistency and longevity - if he achieves that it would be hard to argue he wouldn't be in the top 3 after King Ken and Sir Ian. COYP Don't take anything away from Johnny Byrne , your Dad was right, he was great, playing for England (when they were a top team) when Palace were in the 4th Division, only an exceptional player could do that

The best player ever to wear a Palace shirt in my time (since 77). I'm looking at it that he'll only be at Palace for a few more months so enjoy every performance he gives.

I don't ever remember Salako saving our &rses like Zaha is doing or us having a minor minor chance without him. When did we ever sing 'He's just too good for you?'

John was just so solid in attack and defence as a wing back. Outstanding really. And when we came third he was certainly one of the best in a first XI packed with some genuinely very good players. Wilf is the stand out player in a first XI with only two or three very good players. And John's time was when the rules of football favoured the defences before they were changed to favour the attackers. Wilf is fantastic and so was John. But if either of them were chosen to play for today's very top teams Bayern or Juve or PSG then I would have to say John is the one who would fit in more.

Salako was a good player but not in the same league as Wilf. Salako had the benefit of a good side around him but Zaha is practically carrying the club on his own. If we stay up it'll be the greatest achievement in the clubs history by their greatest ever player. 39 years of going to Palace and I don't believe I will ever see a player better than Wilf in another 39.

It's so hard to compare players across eras, isn't it? Wilf is just a joy to watch and I think he loves playing for the club (no doubt the ~£110-120k a week probably doesn't hurt). In my lifetime of watching, Wrightie and Wilf would be the ones. Genuinely special talents who just had something in their DNA that others don't -- a fire to make a difference. Salako really didn't do it over a sustained period. He'd just got there and then got injured and never scaled those same heights ever again. Very sad, really. I've heard it said that Johnny Byrne was something. Btw, the idea that we don't have really classy players is daft. We have many.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

The rest are trailing that trio surely?

I still rate Ian Wright up there for us, he was excitingly classy you didn't know what he would do and although that is similar to Wilf, Wrighty did it over a period of time for us, I was gutted when he left for Arsenal. I think Wilf has the potential to be better, I'd just like to see his goal ratio go up
and it's goodnight from me....... |

Byrne...Wright and Sansom played High level international football,Byrne played on dreadful pitches and was the clever player who had the ability to improve other players...notably Geoff Hurst. Wilf is an exciting player perhaps not quite at that level yet and he certainly plays in a much tougher league ....he is very close but needs to create more chances and score more goals.Perhaps in another couple of seasons.
