We were not...the season points tally indicates that alone. FDB is not coming in and changing a formation or style of play that has has provided us with success over the last 50 odd league games. What is the point of a gradual change? To keep getting the results we were getting in the last 5 games of last year?

Luka was great, no question but Sakho was the difference. Without him marshalling at the back we would have been doomed, even with Luka.

Regardless of the formation we lack quality players wth the ability of keeping the ball. It was not only Delaney who gave away posesssion regularly and cheaply, Hennessy, Ward and Kelly all have traits of it too.

I don't agree with some of FDB decisions granted...not enough preseason games and playing players on sat who hadn't figured in preseason but you are over playing the formation change. We just aren't great...and haven't been for a long time.

Hennessey and Ward haven't been replaced and Kelly us a last resort.

I'll repeat it again for you. We didn't have a number 10, possibly still don't. We struggled to break teams down, at home, therefore did have possession. We could start here with the number 10, and then reorganise, instead of throw it all up in the air, no number 10, no central goal threat and highly vulnerable, and still needing 3+ players.

We don't have the funds for this project of needing 7+ high quality players with a net spend of £30 mil.

We managed 10th and 11th with the "unsuccessful team" that played four at the back. Once we (Pardew) started tinkering that slipped to 15th and, if it hadn't been for Allardyce, it would have been a lot lower than 14th last term.

I frankly don't give a flying what formation we play as long as we get results. "What is the point of a gradual change"? Do you really need to ask that? Because if you have neither the personnel, nor the funds to buy them, to cope with an overnight change of tactics you need to take time to work on them. And, in the meantime, you need to be picking up points, otherwise you end up where we were before we had to employ Pulis and Allardyce to rescue us.

There is nothing to say this season would have started any differently from the finish of the last season as we still had the same defenders that finished when playing in a back 4, where at least 2 plus the GK are not good enough regardless of formation.

We finished 10th and 11th which was fantastic. Suddenly teams wised up to our counter attacking football and decided to let us have the ball and we have never progressed since. Until we adjust to playing a different way we will lose far more games then we win.

I cannot understand how you gradually change a formation or tactics. If something hasn't been working particularly well for a long period of time you don't gradually change it. Look at Conte last year. Changed it half way through the Arsenal defeat and changed the season. I'll await your 'he had the personnel argument' but will remind you that he played Moses at RWB all season.

You mention "Owners" but in reality it was Steve Parish who selected him.

If this doesn't work out and the axe falls sooner rather than later, one suspects that Steve will come in for a great deal of vituperation and will have to don a tin helmet and tighten the straps.

FDB might also be seen as 'Damaged goods' following his exit from Inter Milan.

I am not sure what the selection process is for the owners but I guess without doubt SP would be the main man advising the American partners..

I am not sure of the selection process amongst the owners but I guess it would be SP would have the greater input and you are probably correct that he was the decision maker.

Kind of makes you wonder if it was Pardew or Parish who wanted the more expansive type of football we tried last season.

Sam knew what was coming and knew he couldn't do it again on the small budget he was given, knowing how many players were leaving and needed replacing.

Very interesting thought , that may be the reason why he gave Pardew longer to get it right than we all thought he should have had.
Equally BFS might have known this and it contributed to his reasons for walking.

Nothing to do with the tax investigation at West Ham and Newcastle then?

Thanks for everyones thoughts on here
All good stuff
Im really very worried about the Liverpool game
I watched us get done by 9 up there in the late 70's early 80's
I wouldn't be shocked if they did that to us again
Make no mistake Huddersfield are very ordinary and WILL go down
Liverpool are not !!!

Perhaps it might be beneficial if we did get a right drubbing as the powers that be might revert to a system that our players know and can excel at instead of trying to convert us to Ajax mark two

It was 1989, the 4-3 fa semi win was in the same season, I'd take that as things stand!

Maybe we'll play a different system against Liverpool. I can't see frank setting up the same against them, especially with wilf out. Wouldn't suprise me if we reverted to 532 or 433. He's not stupid, he will have been as p****d off as any of us on Saturday and will know he has to do something different.
