You must be pushing on a bit . Would you have been working at the old town hall with the water feature that ran from the top down the bottom? I'm just trying to work out where the car park was? Was that where Laurence House is now?

There was a lot of crime around but the lies put about by the NF suggested that mugging in the area was purely a black crime, which was total b*llocks. Just another way of theirs to incite racial hatred.

I think the car park must have been where Laurence House is now. Not the most secure site at the best of times. When we used to come out of the pictures we used to hang around by the bus stops and there was normally a bit of an argument with one group or other.

I was 15 in 1977 and hung around with a real mixture of people including some who were in 'gangs'. These gangs were mixed race, both black and white, mostly 16 upwards. I was told there were a few second hand goods shops around the Lewisham/Lee area who used to accept whatever they nicked with no questions asked. These were run by elderly white blokes.

I had little interest in politics but saw what was happening to my friends and it was wrong. Sometimes when something is wrong you have to try and do something about it.

Of course the police are an arm of the state, whatever party is in power, that is what they are for - to enforce the laws of the state.

Its just how it was. You couldn't just rely on the police to deal with the NF and far right, so the ANL et all was a natural progression of similar allied movements defending themselves.

Obviously my experiences are decade on.

The police of the seventies and eighties were dodgy as hell. Wracked with corruption and scandals.
