You missed my point Jamie. If anyone bullied me I probably wouldn't even realise it. And am past caring.

The thread I was talking about was from someone being bullied at work. Sadly not past caring and feeling pretty hurt.

I find East European people reliable courteous and friendly.

Me too, especially my grandparents, who hailed from there!

The original comment was crass and capable of offending some (and anyone offended should be respected) and IMHO (though not a big deal as these things go) in contravention in my view of the HOL published policy...

If the comment was by an Eastern European about Brits in the same general way,I suspect we'd have a few offended posters...

It isn't racist (E Europeans are predominantly of the same "race" as most people here) but it's no better than saying the same generalised bilge about, for example, chinese people, which plainly would be.

On the general point, there could be a real problem if Mods don't review the whole of the past few pages of a thread when they get a report and the system could be open to abuse if (and I said if not that anyone necessarily is)anyone was complaining (perhaps not for the best of reasons always) but doing the same sorts of posts themselves but the object/s of those posters took a more laid back approach and weren't sending in complaints.Maybe the mods always do that anyway,I wouldn't know....

One things for sure, you wouldn't have found the sorely over disparaged hippies doing it!

I agree with your first point but not your comment about his post not being racist.

Let's just change two words so that his comment reads like:-

"Blacks are a bad lot in general.
And we're finding this out due to the open door policy."

There is no doubt that if he had written the above there would have been an outcry but whilst it seems acceptable to defame Eastern Europeans as a group it isn't to black people.

Eastern Europeans...presumably because they are white and when it comes to gender it seems you can slag off men but say anything about 'overly emotional' women and the sky falls down.

I think in a very general sense you have a point though....This said he made the point generally without actually saying what aspects he had an issue with. You in reality need more information before someone throws in the 'racism' charge.....Or should I say this should be how it works...we all know certain people have a fondness for labels. Racism is about assigning characteristics and saying 'in general' is very lukewarm

You could say that the affects of eastern European immigration is in general a bad thing. This isn't racist also if you are yourself European then it's hard to view complaining about another European as anymore more racist as a black person using the 'n' word in describing another black person.

Also if he, in a general sense, is referring to cultural differences I don't see that as racist either. Are we at a stage in society that we can't talk about general cultural differences between different sets of society?....or if we do that we have to talk in positive terms?

I agree that referring to groups of people being this or that is usually inaccurate but if you are not wishing violence on people then it comes down to a judgement call on whether you think it's 'hate' or not.

For some that definition is hit pretty easily.

I think you have the right to be wrong and say inaccurate stuff before you are accused of racism. Well, be given the benefit of the doubt until enough information is collected first.

I myself have been accused of racism and it isn't something I enjoyed or I agree with. I think the label is often used like the 'literally Hitler' label....essentially an intellectually dishonest way of closing down a debate.

This isn't to say that racism doesn't exist, it's just to say that there is a supply and demand problem so some people assign the charge rather more easily than is fair.

To be fair to Nick, I've known him to defend reported people he didn't agree with.

He doesn't deserve the level of personal stuff he gets. We should play the ball, not the man.

I'm actually glad there are people like Nick in the world but he does bring it on himself sometimes. I think it's the moral superiority thing that grates.

I never see myself as being particularly moral Legal but I do get a little tired of hearing our liberal, left friends telling us how we should all think.

Don't worry Hrolf. They are in retreat, the tables are turning.

Try looking in the mirror old bean...you are no different and are SO like that, you just can't see yourself and have only a perception of "the other" and of yourself and your's as spouting umbiased "common sense"."We" see you and the like exactly the same way and truth may be we are (mostly) all like that...
