He didn't fit Newcastle's system either but their manager was clever enough to change their system to play to Gayle's strengths and he seems to be reaping benefits Nail. Head. But what do we expect? They have Rafa Benitez...we have had Holloway, Warnock, Pulis and Pardew.

None of our managers could get the best out of Gayle even though he was our top scorer in every season while with us. Not in the league, where it counts, he wasn't. In the Premier League: He tied with Jason Puncheon with 7 in 2013-14. Glenn Murray was our top scorer, followed by Jason Puncheon in 2014-15. 2015-16: Bolasie, Cabaye, Dann, and Wickham all got more league goals. The argument about Gayle also ignores the fact that we score plenty of goals now. It's at the back where we look frightful. He did score goals against lower league opposition. He still does, but it will be interesting to see if he can manage it if Newcastle get promoted.
If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

The truth is none of us know what DG would have achieved it he played in the right formation or with the right manager in the PL. But 4 successive managers did not think him good enough to play in the formations that best suited our team while in this division. And when he did play in that role he was very rarely any form of success. The simple fact is we didn't have the personnel to be able to control a game with 2 men in midfield. So we couldn't play 442. I don't think I have ever seen many suggest DG isn't a natural goalscorer or wouldn't be able to score goals. But he simply can't do it as a lone striker. I'm pleased for him. His record this season is terrific. And he's looking likely to make me some decent money as top scorer (bet at 10-1). But on the assumption we would have still played 451/433 then can anyone say he should still be at the club? Can anyone imagine him getting in ahead of Big Ben, or even a fit Wickham in that lone striker role?

I don't hate the fact that we sold him. But let's be far why did we sign Remy? Surely to play alongside Benteke... Therefore Gayle could have done that job. That's all. Oh and this little link [Link]

Oh and this little link [Link] Not really relevant as its in a lower standard of football and i reckon, injuries permitting, Messi will outscore Gayle over the season.

We should have kept him, bearing I mind 20 % of his sale price went back to Peterborough,so not the brilliant piece of business many claim. But we needed to sell to buy Townsend
