I don't think anyone has asked for Israel to be disbanded. There are plenty of people there who agree that Palestine has a right to sovereign state and self determination, as there are many in Palestine who could coexist with Israel next door.

Not you perhaps.....While I rarely agree with you Nick one thing I can state is that you genuinely wish for whatever outcome involves the least amount of suffering.

Even if we disagree how to bring that about.

Who has demanded Israel is disbanded?

I can understand why Israel is precious to Jews in the same way as Palestine is to Christians and Muslims.

As we have discussed the question is how to get passed religion and deal with some of the regions true issues.

Arguably only Israel has the real power to end the conflict, essentially by raising the standards of living in Palestine and granting increasing autonomy to the PA.

Increasing prosperity of opportunity in Northern Ireland for Catholics, and the poorest groups of protestants, was probably as important to the peace process as Trimble, Mowlem and Adams. Whilst people have less or nothing much to lose, they'll will fight for more.

The problem is that certain factions in Palestine won't allow that, as it undermines their own position as the 'authentic resistance'. Arguably, Israel's best time to have achieved that was back in the days of the PLO and Arafat.

We might not like this ring wing Israeli government at the moment. People may be against Israeli actions......Rational arguments can be produced about the injustice of 47 (and it was).

However, it's only fools who support the modern removal of Israel..Still fools can waffle all they like because no western government is ever going to back their anti Israeli rhetoric or back efforts to weaken it when it is surrounded by enemies.

The alternative to Israel? Matt is right.

Besides no outside agency could disband Israel without something like genocide, just as no outside agency could disband Iran for example.

It would have to be hugely expensive and controversial and what would replace Israel? Not only that we would then have to deal with Jewish extremists to add to the Islamic ones we already have.

Israel wouldn't disband even if they did. Even the US if it wanted to, would be wary of taking on Israel militarily (and it has nuclear capability). Its one of the best equipped and trained military forces in the world. Its not one of the worlds biggest military spenders in vain.

If only a new government in Israel didn't have Hamas to work with in an opposition government.....Maybe some tentative progress could be made.

At the moment it only appears that the 'far right' on both sides continue to win with their own insular agendas.

How often in history have we seen that it is governments that stand in the way of peace?
Only truely 'popular' movements on both sides of the border stand a chance of achieving a more-or-less permenant peace.....and they don't exist in any numbers at the present time.

If anyone doubts the devil exists, look to Isis, pure evil.

Strange the world seems much more appalled by the actions of Israel, when Isis massacre every day more Muslims than Israel has in the whole of this offensive.
