Crucial home victory as we attempt to catch Man City for the automatic spot. Wrighty getting the winner in a very tight match.

Palace 1 Shrewsbury 1

Probably the greatest moment in our history: a POINT against The Shrews!

Again our bogeyest of bogeyest teams managed to stop us from winning despite us going up and them going down that season. I just don't know what it was?! But if anyone remembers, we absolutely battered them that day and still found ourselves 1-0 down with 15mins left.

Wrighty's equaliser mind you nearly took the net off, in his frustration he absolutely thunderbolted the ball in just to make sure.

After the game Wright commented: "When Shrewbury went ahead i've never heard a crowd turn so quickly. They have no patience!" Glad to see things never change.

Looks like the frustration of the day just got to Wright and he decided to kill one of the Shrewbury defenders. Still protesting his innocence by the look of it.

same game.

The players trudge off heads bowed despite the point, as Shrewbury salute their away support. Their No.5 celebrating arms aloft like they'd won the cup. You'd think they would've got used to taking points off us....

THAT game against Birmingham. One of the most craziest games i've ever been to if the not the most.

This picture looks like it was taken when the players returned to the field after the game was suspended for half an hour after the mother of all riots.

Palace 4 Birmingham 1

As Brum keeper Martin Thomas takes the goal kick, subdued Place fans line the pitch waiting to invade....subdudely .

Man City's late goal at Bradford meant we couldn't nick the automatic promotion slot and had to go through the play off lottery instead.

Come to think of it, I think us fans created a Palace record: i can't remember us ever invading the pitch 3 times in one season. Come Blackburn we were well choreogaphed!

Bournemouth 2 Palace 3 Any Palace fan at this game will never forget it. 2-0 down very early on; 3-2 up by half time amid chaotic scenes on the terraces as Palace fans are arrested left right and centre by the 'wonderful' local police and stewards; a second half where we missed more one on one chances than i've ever seen us do.

One of the stewards collapsed and died of a heart attack after this game...

This was on the day of the Purley train crash and I think there were concerns that Bournemouth supporters may have been on the train from Littlehampton that was one of the trains involved, as there were several announcements for people to phone home/relatives.

I lived over the road from where it happened, and my mum, brother and sister had just been shopping in the old Purley Sainsbury's by the swimming pool and heard it happen. Apparently one of the trains tried to brake just before it happened which was followed by a loud bang.

4.3.89 Palace 2 Bournemoth 3

Looking back at promotion that year and the unbelievable success of the next 2 seasons beyond all our wildest dreams, I always hold this game as the turning point that began that amazing period.

We knew we were one of the best teams in the league, yet for one reason or another, come March we were languishing in 12th place in Division 2. Frustration didn't quite cover it. Down came Bournemouth, who at the time were in the top 6. Our midfield partnership of Thomas and Pennyfather were out injured for virtually the rest of the season, and we had to make do with Pardew, and an unknown making his first start for Palace: Dave Madden

Shockingly, we found ourselves 3-0 down, and the mood in the crowd was utter despondency. We felt the promotion dream was over yet again, and that the team we felt were going to deliver something special at Palace were not as good as we had hoped.

To compound our collective frustraion and depression, Wright and Bright - both unmarked in front of goal and going for a header to get a goal back - clashed heads with almost comic timing and both fell to the ground in agony (pic 3). Could things get any worse? But that was it for me! That was the moment everything turned round.

We then went on an onslaught, grabbing 2 goals and so very nearly getting a third (pic 4). Dave Madden, in 90 minutes, had shown us that here was the hope we had been waiting for. From cynical murmurs from the crowd - 'who's this old fashioned free transfer from Reading?' - to a real feeling that he was the missing piece in the jigsaw, and so it proved.

We then went on a run of 11 wins out of 14, just 1 point away from hauling back Man City for an automatic place, this after trailing 17 points behind in mid-March!

Pic 1 - Bournemouth free kick. Palace players (from l to r): Burke, O'Reilly, Bright, Pemberton (obscured), Hopkins, Pardew, MADDEN, McGoldrick, Barber
