George Orwell fought against fascism in the Spanish civil war ('Homage to Catalonia') and was scathing about capitalism and the right, also about the British empire ('Burmese Days').

There is a fantastic and hilarious rant against 'capitalist bum-lickers' in Homage to Catalonia which had my spanish lady friend at the time in stitches.

His portrayal of Britain approaching war in 'Coming up for Air' make you feel you are there yourself, 'Keep the Aspidistra Flying' a gentle mockery of English class.

It's very odd for a right wing person to quote Orwell, he was nothing of the kind.

Of course Orwell was an old fashioned Socialist, there is no dispute about that. However, he was as anti-Communist as he was anti-Fascist, he was also anti-homosexuals and probably anti-semitic. 'Animal Farm' is of course a complete refutation of the communist Russian Revolution, in '1984' the country to run by INGSOC “English Socialism”.

Perhaps you chose not to read the link I sent. Here is what Orwell said about 1984:-

“My novel Nineteen Eighty-Four is not intended as an attack on socialism, or on the British Labor party, but as a show-up of the perversions to which a centralized economy is liable, and which have already been partly realized in Communism and fascism. I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe (allowing of course for the fact that the book is a satire) that something resembling it could arrive. I believe also that totalitarian ideas have taken root in the minds of intellectuals everywhere, and I have tried to draw these ideas out to their logical consequences. The scene of the book is laid in Britain in order to emphasize that the English-speaking races are not innately better than anyone else and that totalitarianism, if not fought against, could triumph anywhere.”

I agree with him. It could. We must protect democracy.

The sentence I have highlighted is very telling. It is exactly the direction that what passes as the left these days is moving in.

I think he would have been amused by the ‘support’ of the likes of you and Steeleye, as you and he are just the sort of lefties that he detested.

That is just the sort of dissembling that Orwell homed in on. Of course you are a 'leftie', people merely need to read your posts to see that.

Not just reward for failure. But reward for breach of privacy, and gross misconduct.
