I probably support this, it’s more the way it’s been done I disagree with. To me it’s about managing expectations, to be given Christmas and then have it taken away with six days to go is worse than if you were never promised it. All of a sudden introducing another tier, it’s as if the virus is running the country and not the government. It’s easier for Boris politically to cancel Christmas after Parliament has broken up for the holidays. Plus of course it looks like he tried. I’m now waiting to see how virulent this new virus is, when of course it would usually be less virulent. A couple of things came to mind earlier. Where’s the shielding program if this is dangerous?

I’m not upset by this at all but I don’t agree with it either. I’m dubious the vaccines will vaccinate enough people in the speed they hope, and I don’t believe they’re sure the vaccine will work with new variants. Plus it isn’t guaranteed to stop vaccinated people spreading it. There could just be constant spanners in the works meaning a natural outcome happens.

The whole thing is a nightmare and sad for many people as well but I tell you - being the Prime Minister must be tough right now - as another poster said - his face shows the strain.

The new NERVTAG committee formed to look at the new variant contains none other than the failed Neil Ferguson - what a shock! Lockdowns through January into February on the way. The 1922 committee need to meet to remove the lunatic Johnson and his mates.

Really...? Ah, you are a Telegraph reader. Ferguson's research has raised questions by virologist Hendrik Streeck. Ferguson is the corresponding author for a paper titled "Impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to reduce COVID-19 mortality and healthcare demand", which describes itself as having "informed policymaking in the UK and other countries in recent weeks".[55] Streeck stated in reference to the paper "In the – really good – model studies by the Imperial College about the progress of the epidemic, the authors assume, for example, that 50 percent of households in which there is a case do not comply with the voluntary quarantine. Where does such an assumption come from? I think we should establish more facts."[56] The computer models which Ferguson authored were initially criticised as "unreliable" and "a buggy mess,"[57][58] but subsequent efforts to reproduce the results were successful.[59]

Being on the frontline in a Covid ward will be a concern whenever there are Covid patients in it. The rest of hospitals are the same as, or not if you consider they’re useless at stopping Covid from escaping from Covid wards. Plus they won’t be seeing everyone all year so the health fallout from this is going to be bad for many, and I blame the few months in the summer when they kept all hospitals empty.
