Yes, I'm inclined not to want to react in horror! I don't personally disbelieve that there's a new variant, but there have been several new variants prior that haven't grabbed the headlines. They're highlighting it without offering any indication that it'll impact people more (the opposite may well be true). It looks to be a means of pushing tier 3.

I beleive this is how a virus works. It does itself no favours killing its host so it gets more contagious and slightly weaker to stay alive and carry on its infection to survive. I think that's what happened with the spanish flu. Basically it could be the start of the end so to speak. Figures on deaths may well back this up but it will take 4-5 weeks for the data to show if this is the case.
