If you are willing to walk away....which Labour have pretty much ruled out then the chances of actually cutting a reasonable deal become higher. Labour's policy on Brexit is to essentially lie to the population....no freedom of movement but the single market and customs union.....In other words, they would move on freedom of movement citing 'jobs' and so on. Essentially liars. You don't win at poker by always playing safe....and we are essentially entering a time period very much like that. Edited by Stirlingsays (26 Apr 2017 5.02pm) Of course the Conservative lie is that we 'can just walk away'. No one actually believes they will, or can, without creating all manner of economic consequences. The truth is probably somewhere in between, that we'll actually have to make some deals that aren't in our favour, to get what we want. Truth is, no one wants to tie themselves to policies about how the UK will progress after we leave the EU. Just in case they have to live up to them. I don't really care about the deal, I want to know what kind of UK they want to forge outside of Europe. Because there was no point in leaving the EU if we're just going to become a corporate lapdog which is the issue I had with the EU to begin with.

So strong and stable that two complete outsiders that no one considered the next Tory Leader ended up in a head to head contest. One of whom most of the public had no idea who she was. Yeah, the Conservatives have a good reputation on being stable and strong when it comes to Europe... So much so, that they lost their last prime minister over it.

Surely Europe is the grave-yard of all tory prime ministers. Mrs May headstone being engraved now. They are lemmings over a cliff.

I disagree, May has been touted for years as a future Tory Leader. Obviously Cameron going was not planned but he was going at the no of this term anyway. People, if the polls are to be believed, seem to like May. I don't know if that is because Corbyn is seen as poor or on her own merit. As for Europe, you have a point but Labour have similar problems too, the only party who have not had internal battles over Europe are th LibDems.

Though I think we have to be prepared to turn nasty if the alternative is that the EU wish to turn us into Greece. Obviously there are always political hot heads on both sides but I think the sensible heads will prevail. Still, Brexit was never about economic sense for half the country. Personally I hope some middle ground will be sought but if not then so be it. I don't envisage the EU being around in its present form for that long anyway....The vision of its more ardent politicians for its future just does not carry enough people along with it....and economic threats just make that divide worse.

A Corbyn supporter using that phrase is worth plenty of chuckles.
