The prominent lawyer Jessica Simor QC, from Matrix chambers, has written to May asking her to release the legal advice under the Freedom of Information Act. Simor says she has been told by “two good sources” that the prime minister has been advised “that the article 50 notification can be withdrawn by the UK at any time before 29 March 2019 resulting in the UK remaining in the EU on its current favourable terms. “Such advice would also accord with the view of Lord Kerr, who was involved in drafting article 50, of Jean-Claude Piris, former director general of the EU council’s legal service, and of Martin Selmayr, a lawyer and head of cabinet to the European commission president.” She says “there is no time to waste” and adds: “It is important that this advice is made available to the British public and their representatives in parliament as soon as possible.” Is Brexit really cut and dried? Yes, unless you want a civil war.

Afraid so Nick the whole article explains what COULD happen if we the people decide otherwise by that date.
Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |

Although I would expect a media operation that would make the antics in the general election look like an exercise in utopian fairness and balance if the tories went ahead and tried to reverse the Brexit decision, it would be the final death of the illusion of representative democracy in the UK and political suicide for them. David Cameron has a lot to answer for in committing to the referendum to shore up his short-term power base and the likes of Boris, Nige and the frothing-mouth elements in the media are equally culpable. What's more likely is an ongoing campaign of stalling and pleas for extensions / limited exemptions until after the next general election, when the next government will have to take all the fallout whichever course of action they take.

I'd agree with all of that apart from the criticism of Cameron in this regard....though we know why he did it. Now I've always been a heavy critic of Camerson and the blue rinsers in the party who put the pretty boy ad man there....I was a Davis fan myself. But on the question of the referendum on the EU.....This was a vote that had been delayed and denied for decades....The constitutional changes to the EU relationship had been undergone by both Tory and Labour parties far beyond its original conception and a referendum vote on leaving or remaining was most definitely in the democratic interest. What I have learnt since about the outcome is just how a proportion of people within the country actually don't really care much about democracy. I'm not arguing here about those who criticise the prospect of Brexit....But I am criticising those who are seriously suggesting that the British people should have continued to have been denied a vote on this massive constitutional reality. Self determination should be a fundamental......The EU isn't much interested in that...as its support for the Spanish government's action attest to.....as its urging for second votes when ever a vote against its integrationist ideas occur....as its happy acceptance for no votes to actually occur about its state at all.
