Sadly,,we are only finding a diamond about once every five years. If you look at some of the statistics around Academies, then that is not unusual. Extreme example, but Huddersfield Town scrapped their Academy a couple of years ago because only one player in the previous eighteen years had graduated into the first team. Palace are rightly seeking to improve in order to get Category 1 status. There is a pool of talent around South London and we should be their Academy of choice.

I read we've got the largest catchment area (in terms of population) in Europe. Should be turning up more players, surely?

You look at some of the players that were thought to look promising at youth level but couldn't cut it in the first team or out on loan - Kai Kai being an example. Rave reviews at development level but my mate that coached him at Brentford didn't rate him at all. It's a real churning process but we have seen the value of what can happen when one makes it through as AWB and Wilf have.

Whilst Chelsea tend to just go about ruining youngsters careers, this shows the power of a good academy/recruiting young players early. [Tweet Link] charset="utf-8"></script>

A huge mistake on their part but you can't deny the amount of money they make from just getting young players in, loaning them out then selling them on for profit.

In the case of Kaikai and a couple of others they played under multiple managers at Palace and on loan and weren't rated.

How many of those lads were from the local area? It sort of kills the arguments about having a big catchment area. The Abramovich millions plundering European Academies seems more likely, I can’t see us going down that path. The notion that we should be producing more local lads in the Academy is fanciful, the chance of producing a top quality player is low. We have a better record at producing players than most with AWB and Zaha, but they don’t come along every year.

Apparently we are insisting on £55 million up front and the Zaha sell-on clause cancelled. If this is agreed hope that doesn't mean Zaha will go as well.

It would be nice to think that when and if AWB goes we are told what happened and the "Undisclosed" card wont be played. Parish has stated that both AWB and Wilf wont be sold at the same window, so I'm sure he wont go back on that
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

The football authorities are already closing down on clubs for this.
