Guy on the BBS has posted the following this morning. Make of it what you will.

"morning guys. just thought i would all let you know that i spoke to 2 very good sources whilst out whom are both conected to bournemouth AFC. they have told me that Eddie howe will not be coming to palace, due to financial reasons, not enough money being offered, state of the squad and also position in the league. him and jason have also been offered another job which is there first choice if they do leave. sorry to be the bearer of bad news."

Haha, I think someones made this up. "whilst I was out", "2 very good sources" - you gonna name them? Why were two very good sources out on a Sunday?

Howe doesnt seem like the type of guy to reject a club because of money. State of the squad? It's not that bad and he would have funds available to strengthen.

I think this post was made by a bitter AFC fan with nothing better to do.

Money? Probably being offered twice what he's currently on with massive bonuses for keeping us up and probably promotion in the next couple of years.
State of the squad? This one's a joke. Ambrose, Paddy, Danns, Speroni, Clyne, Iverson = All top quality players that Bournemouth fans would be dancing in the streets if they ever signed. Add to that an academy that is the envy of most Premiership teams it's blatently obvious that a decent manager only needs to add say four decent players and we have one of the best squads not one of the worst!
Position in the league? We are 1 solitary point from safety with 20 odd games to go. Granted we are not chasing promotion but if that were the case we wouldn't be looking for another manager would we? Note to your "sources", clubs usually are underachieving when they seek a new manager and believe it or not they are usually not in a great position in the league!

This is another classic piece of bollox from the Billy Bulls*** Site.

By no means attacking the HOL poster but I think thats boll*cks. I do have a suspicion that he might stay at Bournemouth but not for those reasons. Especially the 'State of the squad' line. He'll have funds to spend and a better 'on paper' squad than he's currently got. I think if he stays it'll be out of a rarity in football called 'Loyalty'. The hyperbole around this chap is a cause for concern. Ok he's achieved at Bournemouth but his 2 year management track record is a concern. I'd have Hughton over EH any day. I'd like a manager that has some credible record/career of playing/working at the highest level possible, especially right now. EH concerns me that we're preparing for a rebuild in Div one. As mad as this may seem. If we got him great and I'll back him. If we don't and got CH then I'd be much happier. Given our current plight and needs I'm not convinced that EH is the right man for job at the minute. Another factor in his difficulty in leaving is his own limitations. He could be aware that he's an inexperienced manager and needs to learn his trade much more at his home club where he's successful.

who did you have in mind?

"I'd like a manager that has some credible record/career of playing/working at the highest level possible" doesn't describe Chris Hughton, Eddie Howe or ANY REALISTIC target for the next Crystal Palace manager.

What's wrong with him taking a little bit of time (Oh my god THRRRREEEE WHOLE DAYS!) to make what is a huge decision for him?

It's not just a change of job, it's a complete upheaval of him/his family & he needs to assess whether he considers himself ready and good enough to make such a big change worthwhile. Not just from his point of view, but from our point of view too. He doesn't want to do us any diservice by making a rash decision when he's not ready.

There's nothing wrong with him having such a huge emotional connection to Bournemouth, the vast majority of his professional career (playing & managing) has been there & he's currently part of a huge love-in with both fans and the players- this is something that is all too rare in football, and how many times do we all whinge about people in football "leaving/only being in it for the money" or "having no loyalty"... and now some of you are having a dig at him for not jumping off his Bournemouth bandwagon like s*** off a shovel.

Let's hope he mulls it over and comes to a decision that is best suited for all concerned:
-We could get one of the brightest young managers in football
-Eddie gets a chance to better himself at a (slightly) bigger club
-Bournemouth get a nice lump of compensation money.

(come to Palace Eddie)

I don't disagree with any of this per se. I think all your points are valid ones. Where I do disagree with you is over the timing. I can only speak from personal experience but for me, I resolve the issues above BEFORE I speak to the prospective employer and not after the interview. It's a waste of time for me and for the employer to spend time interviewing if I am not 100% sure I want to move, my family would be happy to go, I am certain it would be the right career path, etc. So while all the points you raise are real ones, I think Howe has put the cart before the horse in accepting a job interview before he has resolved in his own mind whether he is ready to make the change. And this reality is doing him no favours, and is why supporters are getting increasingly frustrated.

Funnily enough I find myself in a similar situation now. I have had a very good tacit offer for a job overseas on the table since before Christmas, but I have refused to have an interview simply because I do not want to live abroad again, move my kids, etc. even though it would increase my salary and dramatically improve my career prospects and standard of living. And that's my problem with Howe. He shouldn't be interviewing for other jobs until he's certain he's happy to accept the right one. I can understand him soul searching about whether Palace or Charlton were right for him (that stuff, you can only find out at an interview) but not about whether he really wants to leave Bournemouth. If he doesn't know that, like I said, he shouldn't be interviewing.

By all means say "no" because Palace or Charlton doesn't feel right, but not because of something you should have sorted out before you even had an interview (leaving your old job.) Because of this, Howe appears to me increasingly indecisive and unsure of himself; not qualities I personally want in a key hire.

I don't understand, you're saying he shouldn't take interviews for other jobs unless he's 100% certain he wants to leave, but BEFORE interviewing for his next position?

So let's just say for a second he hears Palace want to discuss our vacant manager's position with him. He, as per your guidelines, tells Bournemouth "right, i'm leaving, Palace want me and i'm going to go to the interview tomorrow"

...and then Palace decide after the interview, that Eddie Howe isn't the man they want?

What happens then?

I agree EEA, an interview is a two way meeting to find out what the goals of the two parties are and if they get on on a personal level, if those goals converge, then it could all work. Then there are the finances to discuss, which is the reason we all go to work for!

If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all!

The more I think about it the more I'm wondering about EH. They guy clearly loves Bournemouth to his bones and is going through severe emotional torment wondering whether to come to Palace. I think he might be having a nervous breakdown right now just thinking about possibly moving on from his beloved Cherries.

You know what? If it's that hard Eddie, don't worry about it. Stay where you are. We'll be fine. We wouldn't want to take you out of your comfort zone or anything. If you come here you'll need to be totally focussed on us, not having a lump in your throat about the club you appear to be umbilically attached to at the moment.

Just decide one way or the other and make it snappy, the transfer window is running out. Ta ever so.

Agreed.

Must admit that I'm getting a bit tired of reading and listening to how much he loves Bournemouth. He really should just stay where he is if it really is that much of a wrench for him.

At the end of the day, he'd be a lucky man to be the manager of our club. We're a good club to manage with owners and fans who would back him fully. It would be the next logical step in his managerial career. A club with ambititon to progress, decent players to manage, and a very good pool of academy players.

Yet all we are hearing is how great this guy is and how lucky we would be; "Eddie this, Eddie that...blah blah blah". Well, there's no dount he's a good, bright, up and coming manager, but he hasn't done anything yet. He has a long way to go before he can be classed in the same bracket as someone such as Steve Coppell.

If he does decide to join us, then great. He would be lucky to manage Palace. If he doesn't, then so be it. He just obviously wasn't the right man for us. The club is, after all, bigger than any individual. We'll bring in a man who give a 100% to Palace.

Rant over.

-and to those all still harping on for Coppell, what par of 'retired from football management' don't you understand?

Well said and thank you. I'm astounded, in these days of there being no loyalty in this game at all - or so it seems - that there are people here slagging Eddie off for wanting to be sure that he makes the right decision.

Not wishing to put words in Syd's mouth, but I think what he means that mentally, Howe should've resolved the issues in his head before talking to Palace.

Oh, and on the Coppell/retired comment: I wouldn't be so sure, whatever he has supposedly said in the past.

The man has got a very difficult decision to make and although apparently, we got to him first, there are other clubs queueing for his services <http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/sport/>. Even if he stays put for the timebeing, another club will inevitably lure him away so Bournemouth will lose him anyway. Is Crystal Palace an attractive enough proposition for him? I hope so, but we'll know soon enough.

We know we'll lose him. I think our only hope was that we would at least keep him until the end of the season. If he goes now it will very much feel like unfinished business. We'll never know if he could have got us into the playoffs/promotion. Especially if you'd seen how the team played yesterday, you'd understand why we think that's even a possibility and it seems mind-boggling given where we were - 9 points adrift at the bottom of League 2 staring oblivion in the face - when Eddie took over almost exactly 2 years ago.

You are absolutely right, and I feel for you, but I'm sure that's something he's taking into consideration. Staying at AFCB for a few more months will not devalue him and there will still be clubs looking for new managers at the end of the season.
