Lots about immigration today... Cable claims May suppressed evidence showing immigration has little effect on wages Sir Vince Cable, the Lib Dem leader, claimed today that Theresa May suppressed up to nine reports when she was home secretary showing that immigration has very little impact on wages. He would know because he served in the coalition cabinet with her, as business secretary. In a statement he said: When I was business secretary there were up to nine studies that we looked at that took in all the academic evidence. It showed that immigration had very little impact on wages or employment. But this was suppressed by the Home Office under Theresa May, because the results were inconvenient. Overwhelmingly it has been the case that overseas workers have been complementary rather than competitive to British workers. The exodus of trades people, NHS staff and tech industry workers shows the potential damage of an extreme Brexit. Meanwhile, May is starting to talk about restricting numbers. The EU (according to Farage on the wireless just now) will respond by stopping a transition period. Wonder how voting will go in parliament on the EU bill.

Cable is disingenuous. Isn't this also a bit unethical? He was in a government. How much wages affect people depends upon how diverse you make the sample. Lies, damn lies and statistics.

Nick, I dare you to take this idea that immigration doesn't suppress wages round to building sites across the south east, delivery drivers, taxi drivers, and well, pretty much any non PAYE job that requires investment in youth to train people up to a hireable level and see what response you get.

Wages are being driven down in all sectors. The daily rate for supply teachers has dropped by thirty or forty quid a day. Immigration isn't responsible for this. Where there are sectors where immigrants are undercutting wages, is it not common for these jobs to be advertised abroad. That's down to bosses trying to squeeze as much profit as possible. That's conservative Britain for you. Squeeze the f*** out of workers to make more profit and find something to blame for it other than what it really is.

Clearly immigrants willing to work for low wages drives down wages. Clearly having hundreds of thousands of immigrant each years deepens the housing crisis. Clearly such immigration strains education, health and other services. Clearly such levels of immigration cause community tensions. It is simply nonsense to pretend otherwise.
We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell] |

The supply teacher wages are government policy related. The failure to incentivise and base taxes around encouraging apprenticeships and training mean the immigrants are needed. The problem is twofold or threefold. Employers, government, immigrants. Pick whichever order, doesn't really matter. The constant import of cheaper labour will just feed the cycle. Then after earning less, they face the housing problem. Again, housing suppliers, government, immigrants. I don't blame anybody in particular or any group. All take some blame, all care about the short term. Edited by Rudi Hedman (06 Sep 2017 8.46pm)

Only a total moron can't see that a bigger available work force has to stagnate wages Not that I'm suggesting that you are a moron.
