I expect they have set up some sort of vacuum police who will come round to see if your carpets are clean, and if so, produce a search warrant to find your cleaner of mass destruction. IF found you will be subject to some dreadful punishment - a weekend in Brussels perhaps. Why didn't you post the link? Probably because if anyone reads the article, the decision is actually a very good one for the consumer, even Dyson agrees with the policy. The only person to disagree is A guy from UKIP, who hates the EU and anything European. "Sir James Dyson:: You can have a perfectly good vacuum cleaner running with lower energy. The latest Dyson model does qualify under the new EU rules" "Vacuum cleaner salesman Howard Johnson, who works in Coventry, told BBC News: "People want a more powerful vacuum cleaner but they can't see that more power doesn't mean more suction. There again, as the article states, the UK is perfectly at will to import cheap, low quality and high energy consuming products from China after April 2019. Edited by europalace (01 Sep 2017 11.59am)

Edited by europalace (01 Sep 2017 11.59am) I notice you didn't include the fact that Dyson Vacuum cleaner entrepreneur Sir James Dyson has been in a court battle with the EU because he says the vacuum standards test doesn't replicate real world conditions. Anyway, the quality of Dysons is vastly exaggerated, they are flimsy and break pretty quickly, the DO lose power/suction and are overly expensive. Their reputation is built on clever marketing. Buy a Henry instead - go in practically any hotel and they will be using one. Edited by hedgehog50 (01 Sep 2017 3.32pm)

We are signed up to this and its difficult to understand why anyone would be against helping the planet deal with our excesses. Thee are no minuses I can see - reduced bills less emissions carbon - has to be the way. A weekend in Brussels truly terrible as the EU will agree as they evacuate it for the weekends. You can't even end brexit by throwing yourself in the river there - there isn't one.

Abolishing the EU with its palatial buildings, forests of paper, fuel emissions from it's travelling circus, dumping of fish, dumping of food, financial attacks on third world farmers, would do more to help the planet than confiscating grannies' hoovers.

What do you think the houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace etc are, garden sheds? You have exactly the same political infrastructure in the UK which costs UK citizens much more than that of the EU since these costs are spread across many EU nations. You forgot to mention in your anti European rant that the UK supplies massive amounts of arms to the middle east which end up killing thousands of innocent children and their families. I'd take a bit of fish and food 'dumping' any day over that. Edited by europalace (01 Sep 2017 6.02pm)

Does anybody remember what 'hard brexit' was? Whatever happened to it?

Why not cars, which are way more powerful than they need to be to perform the function they're designed for? Is it because the European car manufacturers would say no and have more clout than Dyson? I'm not against a drive to make things more efficient, and there is no real need for a car which does 140 mph on normal roads, just like there's no real need for a hoover that could suck a golf ball through a straw. The more I think about it, the more examples I see - 60 inch TVs, massive sound systems, air conditioning, inefficient heating, and so on.

Well, the within the EU we do have strict emission standards for vehicles which are made more strict every 3 years - Now EURO 6 and Euro 7 in 2020 I believe. Also, before the anti Europeans on here mention the VW diesel emissions saga, those were tiny amounts over the specified limits. The US jumped on this because it can't compete with European car manufacturing quality and has always wanted this to be weakened. The US car manufacturing industry is a miserable failure compared to Europe and Japan. There are have also been power consumption controls on many other items such as fridges, washing machines etc, all very good IMO and a standard by which other parts of the world can learn from. Even China is starting to look at controlling emissions and resultant pollution. A shame the US remains in denial. Edited by europalace (01 Sep 2017 7.31pm)

Yes I think about it a lot and its really striking me, as I look out at on Croydon High St. the BMWs Mercedes etc. that cars are an inefficient piece of c**p used as a means of determining status not travel. A 'young retired' gent has just whizzed by on his bicycle with a big smile on his face no wonder - he has a far better chance of getting to where he needs to go on time, at no cost to the environment.
