That makes sense.

Unrelated but I wonder how the Albanian government feel about losing so many of their workforce?

If it concerns them then maybe we could send all suspected Albanian economic migrants there, having provided them with documentation evidencing their UK arrival, which they could use should the Albanian authorities fail to establish they are their citizens. Maybe that, or something like it, is what the arrangement you mention is going to do.

If they know they will be coming back swiftly then they won't be so ready to pay the criminals.

Norman Wisdom has a lot to answer for!

Workforce? you are not serious surely?

I used to live 5mins from Manston airport, little village called Birchington, moved there in 2001 for my job, there was a farmer Mansfield who used in eastern Europeans to pick the crops, 100s of them, when the picking season stopped they turned to crime to cover themselves until the next season, the area went downhill rapidly, they don't know what to do with Manston airport i believe it is the longest runway in the Uk, i engineered my own redundancy in 2009, and moved to Lanzarote.

Very wise! Manston is just housing development in the making. Never made it as a passenger airport because of the poor access but used to be a hub for air freight. I think the HS1 (High Speed rail link) isn't far away but no cared to do a link to the airport. The fruit/ crop pickers visas would have been temporary and they shouldn’t have been there out of season. However, once again, no one cared.

Spiderman I appreciate you have more practical knowledge on this topic but surely technology can help here. Facial recognition for example is not perfect but should speed up the CCTV process. We could also insist on fingerprints before they catch their plane.

It seems the will is simply not there.

The fingerprinting idea is a good one, unfortunately the powers that be don’t see airport arrivals as so much of a problem and I doubt would soend the money. You also would have t***s like O’Leary refusing to play ball. When a undocumented passenger is matched to a specific flight, that airline is fined £2000, even if they had completed all necessary checks. At one time EasyJet we’re refusing to pay up.
Facial recognition would help but they could have arrived at either terminal and at any time, so still very time consuming.

I'll start this by saying that I have only ever travelled to 'Western' countries and so this may not be a relevant solution for all situations, but what about...
1. At the departure airport, passport is scanned and linked to a flight number (which I assume it already is)
2. Details on passports are then electronically sent to the destination airport, thereby giving advanced details of arriving passengers.
3. If somebody flushes their passport down the toilet at Arrivals, the UK Government then can match their face to the info previously received.
4. Departure point therefore known and claimant can be returned.

Or is that too simple (or complicated)?

Why don't they have electronic gates immediately people step off the plane it would automatically take your photo and fingerprints so even if you have ditched your passport we would know what plane they arrived on.

Like I said the will doesn't appear to be there from the government.

Badger you should put yourself forward to be Home Secretary or very least Head of Border Force!! Not only no will but if it was free we would get it!

Having said that I have been involved in cases where we have found concrete evidence that a passenger had come from a specific country ie hotel receipts, photos but that country refused to take them as we could not show an arrival stamp in the passport.

We do now get API ( advanced passenger information) so has indeed helped. Unfortunately if no stamp in passport from departure country they don’t accept them, yes it is bonkers! Numerous Central Americans arriving at Gatwick having transitted and changed in Spain, no stamp from Spain not accepted back

Do you remember when you were young and went on a school trip to a foreign country? The teacher used to collect the passports and hand them over en block to whoever needed to see them. So, if the airline held the passports at gate departure and was responsible for handing them over on arrival...

Your school trips were more exotic than ours. We had one when we got taken to see the glories of the newly built Thamesmead.
