I have been thinking this as well. Which goes back to my previous point: why doesn't Hodgson make substitutions when players are running on empty?

Because he was absolutely knackered at the end of a long, tough game. The same reason Luka probably didn't close down Matic quick enough. Indeed!

Presumably he judges that a good player who's tired is better than a weaker player who's fresh but also cold. Would have been borne out by what happened when he brought Delaney on against Spurs.

Not had a great season but getting criticised for everything he does at the moment. Decent game Monday night. He's also our best defender from set pieces most of the season. Not what he's signed for but big difference.

Fancy him to score tomorrow. The way he played against man u he deserved one but with de gea making a quality save to keep it out. It's getting to close for any comfort with us being where we are he's got to contribute quicky. If he doesn't put chance's away then he should be dropped. It does look like roy will go with Sorloth and Wilf for the run in to the end of the season. It's the only way for the whole team to move forward and God willing we move away from the religation zone.

Thanks - you have backed up my original point - if Tomkins had to go off due to cramp it shows that he (and many others) have been run into the ground by Hodgson due to his inability to substitute at the right time throughout the current campaign.

As I have posted before Benteke was a bad buy/mistake.Sorloth and wilf upfront ,is are only hope of getting out of relegation places .It hasn’t worked with him upfront alone or with Sorloth alongside .

I wouldn't call 90 minutes of football once a week run into the ground. They are after all professional athletes. With a squad down to its bare bones you either get first teamers like Tomkins playing the full 90 mins or coming off to be replaced by inferior replacements like Damo. We cant have it either way. Neither option is ideal but it's where we currently are with our current squad and injuries. Edited by Tom-the-eagle (10 Mar 2018 10.29am)

Shiver my timbers This is being critical of a vastly experienced manager who has supposedly erred "Throughout the current campaign". At the end of the day Hodgson took over a stricken team and has performed miracles thus far.He has been fighting an uphill battle all season and certainly lack of options from the bench has restricted his ability to make changes during a match. We don't have that luxury of always being able to introduce players to replace lads who might be flagging towards the end I am sure that Hodgson has felt such a course was required but due to the state of the game and his bench, his options have been limited.
