I spent a few hours earlier with a couple of my bowling friends, both retired. One an ex policeman, who was at Hungerford and the miner’s strikes, the other a software engineer.

Both made interesting observations about the current situation. The ex policeman said that dealing with unrest is now much harder than it was in his day, because everyone has a camera and every move is recorded. Both by their bodycams and by those causing the unrest, who thrust cameras at the police whilst goading them. He expressed sympathy for the officer at Manchester airport and also said that in the USA the police would just shoot a few of them, whilst in Europe many would be given a beating and no questions would be asked.

The software engineer said he thinks that social media is producing mental health issues for teenagers, where they both get fed misinformation and suffer abuse that they cannot handle.

I suspect there is some truth in both of these, but how we overcome them isn’t straightforward. Putting stronger obligations on the social media companies seems urgently needed, but will be loudly resisted. Outright bans on any provider which refuses to moderate unacceptable content effectively must be done.

Not exactly like Songs of Praise at Canterbury.

And i guess it doesn't count as Sectarian violence when all the participants are from the same Sect ?

I think there are several hundred strands of Islam - under the two main ones. In Galway one mosque attacked another mosque. Originally labelled a racist attack until the truth was revealed. With all of the usual crying babies jumping on the bandwagon. And then going totally silent.

You both needn't worry too much. This government will definitely be introducing censorship and curbing civil liberties. They will probably be heralded by the media - such is the double speaking nature of it these days. You can then bask in your bowls glory knowing that more of the majority population - or morons and thugs as you describe them - can be coerced to live by your ideology. Job done. You should have been labour all along.

The establishment and their shills can be thankful that all they have achieved is to worsen the situation.

The reaction by Starmer will have cut deep into the northern working class white psyche. It will be interesting to see what his figures are.

Well said.

Their reactions aren't going to go well for them, the disconnect between the uniparty and the people affected by their politics is only going to widen.

This country is becoming a parody of what it once was.....You could say pretty much what you wanted in the country I grew up in.

When you hear establishment shills calling for the same kind of media control over private companies that exists in Russia, China and Ukraine.....You have to smile.

Even more amusing when they claim to be in the centre, when essentially they want a 'ministry of truth' in all but name....gate keeping alternative interpretations....most of which are far closer to the truth than their filtered lies.

correct. Your internet words will be monitored, proscribed, censored. Effectively muzzled.

However, every street can still have a religious bookshop. Awash with old Holy texts riddled with incitement to violence, racism, homophobia, misogeny, and other hate.

And every 17 year old can afford a copy. Everywhere. Including Southport.

It's about time the true nature of these so called bowling clubs is investigated - the softly softly approach has been going on for far too long.

I doubt it.

Unless you regard protecting people from hateful behaviour as censorship or curbing civil liberties.

I think it would be increasing the civil liberty of most.

To even think that the majority support the attitudes of those involved in these disturbances would be funny, if it wasn’t so pathetically untrue. It just demonstrates how totally out of touch with reality the right wing cohort that populate these pages are.

Most people are appalled. Some, like my policeman friend, just shrug their shoulders and say it happens from time to time. He thinks if it wasn’t this, it would be something else and that there is a sub group in society who are always ready for a tear up. Mostly young men. In my youth they were mods and rockers. Then there were football hooligans. Now there are Y-L clones. These are isolated from society. Not part of it.

The difference today is the cause they pretend to support happens to chime with one that is popular here.

The only significant change I trust will arrive, not just here but internationally, is stronger regulation on the social media. Real harm is being caused and that cannot be ignored. All regulation is a balancing act between benefit and restriction, and when the balance has shifted so much action must follow.

The Minister for policing has informed us:-

….there was prison capacity to jail those convicted.

So it will be interesting to see how far down the pecking order they go to accommodate the hundreds that are being arrested, seeing as they are already concentrating on early release to ease capacity.

"We cannot have people feeling they are not safe on their streets, particularly communities who don't feel safe because of the colour of their skin," she added.

For ‘colour of skin’ equals non-white. White people will still be expected to be killed by people of a different ethnicity….

Don’t complain.

hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing.
