He always claims to have no input on deals. If he is that unhappy then maybe he should be more assertive. My feeling is that perhaps he has been pushed by people within the club (or possibly the media) as to why he is not using the youth players (rightly or wrongly) and that is why it has become an issue of late. He certainly seems less composed, whatever is driving that. Perhaps Spiderman's observation is indeed the catalyst.

Roy was being candid, we do not have a string of academy players or U21's we can fit into the PL, they are not good enough yet.

We have a paper thin squad due to lack of investment an a poor medical team who presumably look at incoming transfers like Henderson and Ferguson.

Roy is probably getting fed up with having to try and get results with insufficent resources. If this goes on we will need three worse teams than us every year.

The " next level " stuff is dreamland. Unless we are bought by deep pockets we will stay as we are, hopefully not an annual relegation battle but no hope of breaking into top eight

Being candid behind closed doors is one think, I'm not sure how helpful it is in front of the press. Unless he fees like he needs to say to the fans 'see they are not ready'

He took the job, he knew the situation and resources. So also knew this was likely.

Even in pre season , when ever Eze , didn’t play we struggled to make chances and score . Olize, wasn’t an option. Outside of that it was well organised and we could look after ourselves, but that’s all . It used to be take Wilf out and nothing much happened. Wilf, Eze, and Olize changed that. Right now we are back to the same situation as no Wilf. Most the defensive part of the team is probably better than then but we just don’t have enough quality going forward areas, and the answer is not at this time in the under twenty one area. We do have a decent 14/15 when everyone is fit ,which they rarely will be, but come on with five subs and playing 100 minute games you need at least 18 maybe more. If Roy gathers points under these conditions he should be lauded. He said the obvious the other day , the young players can only help us if they play better, it’s the truth harsh if you like, but true. And right now Hodgson doesn’t have a lot to lose in so much as if it develops into a train crash at least he told us so.

If you are right , maybe Parish should tell him to he is not right for the job, as the OP suggests.
I bet bet Parish, is wetting his pants at the thought he might have to go there, why because he knows only to well the truth of Hodgson words and how a mostly moderate man has obviously hit a brick wall with these issues. He is far to long in the tooth , to have got in this situation if he wasn’t promised much more than he got, he is not a forty year old chancer.

Vieira told Eze he wasn’t good enough to play in his team behind closed doors, did it make Eze want to prove a point when Roy joined, just maybe. Telling people hard truths, when they are being very well paid to perform, isn’t a crime.

You could argue that we have spent what it costs to stand still, but have the possibility to do better if everyone stays fit & do worse if injuries / suspensions to key players catch up with us.

Yes, this is reasonable.

but he isn't telling hard truths , he is trying to excuse his tactical failures

take will hughes as CF for 30 mins, that is DE boer level tactical bats***tery,

JRS and Ahmada gave the squad an energy and pace that they didn't have before, that enabled the squad to actually have a chance at one goal or more , so regarding this as a weaker squad only makes sense in terms of a surrendering playstyle we have seen too often when roy chooses our team, or a errant miscalculation of the strengths of our squad for the football game we can play.

Roy always plays safe - he knows no other way.
He has his favourites and even if they play badly week after week he will not drop them.
Ward is now beyond the pale and it is sad to see such a good and loyal player so out of his depth.
Hughes is no more a centre forward than I am and seeing his ponderous snail like run on Friday was embarrassing.
Replace Ward and start playing players in position and give youth more of a chance.
His team and tactics worked for a while but then didn't and so he blamed the subs - really Roy?

Well he left Wolves as he was unhappy with the club's recruitment strategy. So based on that I think it's probably better for all parties not to get involved!

A fine post. Can anyone honestly dispute the points made therein?

Look at the long list of failed managers (and I mean badly) that we have had and Roy is the best we've had for years. o.k.you may have forgotten the Dutchman, superstar (only as a player)Vieira etc.We have paid over the odds to save our souls on Fireman Sam and Pulis neither are progressives and dig trenches in front of our goal,no way would we improve league position under them.Roy suits us and we suit him we are not Manchester City and would not want to be.

I think Roy's comments after Spurs can't be taken in isolation.
After the Newcastle defeat he was asked about the positive contribution of the younger players when they came on as subs.
He was dismissive and said the game was already gone, that their contribution wasn't relevant and that if the press reported positively on their efforts, he would advise the young players concerned not to read the articles.
He seems to be going out of the way not to praise them.
Now this could be way of managing expectations and keeping their feet on the ground and making sure they know they have to earn their place.
It leaves a negative taste in the mouth, but in fairness he usually gets it right on young players.
During his last stint there was a clamour for him to use the likes of Brandon Pierrock and Sam Woods when we were struggling.
I recall him saying there was only one player amongst the young players who was a first team candidate and that was Mitchell.
The others disappeared without trace.

It seems trite and obvious to say Roy knows the game inside out.
You'd like him to be more positive when they do get minutes, but he's unlikely to change now. He believes in his methods and will only play youngsters if he's convinced they will be better than their experienced alternatives (e.g AWB over Ward).
