The suggestion earlier on the thread was anyone under 25 is fair game.

Anyone who looks suspicious, regardless of their age or race, is fair game.

It's when you see the picture you realise that this was just a kid and how horrific it all is. It's incredibly sad. RIP.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

You are not wrong there!

Why are people so convinced that harsher punishments would deter crime? There is little evidence that this is the case.

The social consequences of all under 25s being stopped and search, as well as being a practical impossibility, would be horrendous and probably do more harm than good.

It's a minefield of an area with no easy answers, but progress is surely made by tackling the root of the issue (ie. how a teenager ends up carrying a machete to begin with) as opposed to locking them up for longer once they get to that stage or indeed creating an entire generation of people with issues with the police and authority.

We know what the issue is, broken families, the welfare state has made it so easy for single mothers, the father won't provide so the state will. On top of that we live in a society that pretty much celebrates fathers abandoning their kids while demonising single mothers.

Another problem is the black community is treated as a whole. There's a massive difference between black British, black Caribbean and black African l, culturally. In my experience its black Africans who tend to come from traditional families, with traditional values who put an emphasis on how important education is. Many black professionals tend to have African names in this country. Its not by luck that Africans tend to be fairly religious while British and Caribbean tend to be atheist.

Look at British Indian and British Chinese, both have traditional Conservative values. Both are on average the highest earners in the country.

What steps have the government taken to tackle the root issues?

What do you consider the root issues to be? I am no expert but I suspect being accepted as a gang member is seen as “the way forward” for many.
A few years ago I worked with a chap who lived in Croydon, one evening he went for a takeaway and, for no reason, he was set upon by a gang of black youths. He was severely beaten, spent 1 week in hospital, 3 months off work due to mental health issues as a result. The police attended and basically said he was a victim of a gang initiation. I suppose he was lucky that no knives were involved.
The subject is a political hot potato which no MP whatever persuasion wants to tackle in fear of being branded a racist.

It hasn't, because it's never been properly funded in England. In Scotland, different story. And like Portugal and drugs, it works.

Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons.

Poverty has a pretty big role to play.

Drug problems are worse in Scotland than England.
