The Rugby World Cup goes from one extreme to another with barely if not at all competitive teams providing cannon fodder for the big hitters to warm up before the knockouts see some hum-dingers. It is still a minority sport and perhaps unfortunately, in sticking to it's core and tradition, is becoming almost archaic by not commercialising to the extent the likes of football and cricket have (to many people's chagrin, must be said). That said, Ireland vs All Blacks on Saturday should wet the appetite for most. I personally think it's popularity will have peaks and troughs - it really hit the mainstream more post 2003 in this country. My brother was over there for the Samoa game and Argentina before that and he was less than impressed by us as was I watching from home. We'll probably be lucky to scrape past Fiji at which point my hope will fade to an away match at the Etihad level - you never know but equally a good kicking may be on the cards! C'mon Nick, we've been Citeh's nemesis at the Etihad. My city supporting mate out here, is barred from going by his mates cos of me, so funny. As for England's chances, agree, not sure they will get past Fiji.

France v Ireland final? I think that fits in with the draw. South Africa seem perhaps the most likely party poopers but it would seem mad if France were knocked out. I can only imagine the French reaction. There's always the hope of one good match for England, but I would argue against two in a row - so I can't imagine anything but the slimmest of hopes for England. Ireland could win and Guinness will certainly be happy. France and Ireland seem like the best sides. I suppose it seems harsh to rule out the All Blacks but I'm unconvinced. Refs will be a huge factor. The France v South Africa match could be a bit tasty. And Fiji will fly out of the blocks but probably not last.

The tension is mounting here as Mrs POG prepares to cheer on her beloved Wales this afternoon. Just as well there's no proper football on the telly today or there might have been tears.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
