TBH it doesn't even need to be football related to be relevant. Football fans are a wide spectrum of society and racist incidents happen daily. Besides, I'd be surprised if this was made up – the old boy in question would have grounds for libel and a great legal case. If it is, take them to the cleaners. Oh well, if you're surprised if its made up lets all just condemn the guy now then shall we?

Subjective ultimately though, isn't it. Although I would argue that every generation suffers from the same issue – it's a sort of infant/young adult bias concept. The average joe doesn't think too hard about adult realities between the ages of 0-16 (or later). I know a guy who waxes lyrical about the 70s. Delusional, when you actually look into what was happening back then. Inflation, high unemployment, poor living standards by todays comparison, regular power cuts, strikes, wars, states of emergency, I could definitely go on for several minutes. All he seems to remember was a couple of glorious hot summers. The human brain neve ceases to amaze My generation will be guilty of it as well – but look back properly and you'll see that your rosy childhood memories were not taking into account everything else that was happening around you and need to be heavily revised. Wow, could you just try a little harder to be a bit more condescending?

Veneer – yes. So your issue is with the media, not whether the person in question should be held to account. Glad that's cleared up. Your opinions that equate to all insults are the same is bizarre. Choice vs permanence, as above. Are there other insults/abuses other than race that are worse than getting insulted for wearing a s*** fancy dress outfit? Sure. Should those have equal standing in the media? Probably. Are all types of abuse and insults on the same level? Nope. This is a question of determining relative importance. A football fan insulting a footballer barely registers on the scale of importance. Neither in my view should it be judged based on its relation to race. We all know this, so why all the virtuous grandstanding? It isn't fooling anyone.

I shall try and follow this through to its conclusion as I am interested to see how this compares to the incident involving Roy Keane. Both ‘guilty’ parties have been arrested and so both should follow some due process. The outcomes will be what? A warning for both or a fine for both, or a jail term/community service for both?
hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing. |

A football match wouldn’t be complete without 15 minutes of injury time 2 dodgy VAR decisions and someone being offended. Brave new world.

This is all a very nice deflection from how awful Wolves were on Saturday. One bloke in a crowd allegedly calls a player a rude name and it becomes headlines? Give me a break. What a pathetic society we have become. It was the same with the Son incident at Spurs. Too many people looking to be offended. You are right its not newsworthy, but kindness and politeness aren't good headlines. Edited by Painter (05 Sep 2023 7.58pm)

It depends what type of insult, how it’s delivered, whether the person believes it and so on and so on Couldn’t be any more wrong if you tried

However it’s perfectly valid to debate based on what has happened already, again, caveated with ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ until we know more. He may well have misheard - in which case I’d expect all the people sitting around this chap. Of which there would have been many, to come forward in his defence. And then he can explore legal options for defamation, libel, slander etc. as already mentioned. And quite rightly so On balance, this currently doesn’t seem likely. Note ‘doesn’t seem likely’ ‘People from all ethnic backgrounds get abused all the time’ - classic. That’s alright then, move on, happens all the time. Absolutely fine. Jesus, if this is the general view of our fanbase I despair Despite all that I agree with you that innocent before being proven guilty should be the norm but the fact both clubs and the police are convinced enough to leave themselves open and make public statements tends to start tipping the scales in only one direction. No harm in debating based on available information. Certainly not me getting my knickers in a twist based on that emotionally driven outburst.
