firstly , i appreaciated the improvements to the screen, which had had a number of glitches occur in it's old form. The new digital boards atthe whitehorse lane seemed to be an improvement in adding to clarification of events( though interested to see how it handles when we score- but i suppose first we have to score)

on the match it felt rather even. However we seemed to tire at about the 35 minute mark. we also seemed unable to get into positions quick enough to enable quick balls from the keeper to the defense to begin to attack the opponent , which enabled arsenal ample time to get into a shape to nullify a bunch of our offensive plays. arguably ayew should have come off about the 70th minute for jesun( when he came on between 80 and 85 mnutes in, it reduced his ability to change the game for us) both to provide an extra boost of energy, ensure ayew doesn't get sent off, and provide a better counter to a focus on eze by arsenal.

for the first 30 minutes as mentioned before we actually got the first chance on goal and were able to get more of the early chances on goal, but over the middle third arsenal were able to come at us hard, with numerous close shots near if not actually on goal.

schlupp sub seems sensible ,and often he seems invisible in games

we also seemed to show a bit more grit in terms of trying to win the midfield tackles , but as other forum posters have mentioned we didn't really have a way for those won battles to translate well into chances.

Given this was against a top 2 side looking to win the league, i think this can give us the confidence that we won't get relegated on that performance though those who want us to be a top8 club will be incredibly disappointed with out inability to score with arsenal down to 10 men.

Arsenal obviously play with an ode to the Guardiola school of thought via Arteta and they have some real ‘star players’ especially when you consider both teams acquired central midfielders this summer, ours coming on a free having left Bournemouth but theirs costing £100mil. The difference today was possibly affected by them looking a lot sharper than us however more so was our respective forward lines with theirs being leagues above ours.

Seems like a bit of a small mentality to say but I thought we matched them all over the pitch today outside the forwards which is at least somewhat encouraging. They passed it around a lot but not too often with any real menace and we also managed to get near their goal a couple of times. A loss to nothing isn’t anything to smile about however it was somewhat reassuring that we were in the game all night. I’ve seen many games over this past decade or so where you knew it would take a miracle (and sometimes did!).

Schlupp, Edouard and Ayew doesn’t exactly ‘scream goals’ and hence it did not but would we look much more threatening ourselves with possibly a new player, Franca and Olise? I’d wager a large sum to say yes even whilst still having massive doubts about Franca.

We looked very much a predictable team today however that can be a positive thing in terms of us beating teams we should beat, losing to teams we’d equally expect to lose to and probably ending with a number of draws this season. A very different forward line soon may also improve us dramatically. If for whatever reason it doesn’t, I fear we may start looking as out of ideas as we did in this one.

We really do have a good team there, unfortunately it’s incomplete and possibly in the most critical areas. We won’t get far not scoring goals.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

My take on match was Arsenal started well but as well as last year. For rest of the first half both teams had chances and it was pretty even. We turned off for a split second and gave away a clear penalty. From then on both teams were looking tired and we were struggling to get the ball back. We got a good break when Tommy got sent off as his second yellow was undeserved. To our credit we then got hold of the ball and started to have some joy down the left but to be honest apart from the odd half chance we failed to create a really clear chance.
I thought Mitchell played well - he kept Saka quiet in the first half and linked up well when Arsenal were down to 10 men. I also though Eduaard played reasonably well - better than he has done. Ayew was his usual effective self and with Olise back up to speed we should start to have a decent threat going forward.

Overral a decent performance against an expensive elite side. Jordan put in a good shift as usual and we looked solid at the back. Once again it's evident that we desperately need a strong centre forward who can head the ball on target and unsettle opposition players in their penalty area.

We’ve played the two extremes of the PL in the last two weeks. We carved Sheffield U open at will, last night we got absolutely nowhere. I’ll judge us over the next few games when it should be more balanced.

My comments.

1. Yes it was a pen Guehi made a meal of the block.
2. I thought Eze was a pen but Roy say not so I trust his judgement.
3. Rak Sakyi did well in his cameo what I particularly liked was his positional play a number of times the ball went in and if the Arse had not intercepted would have gone to him.

C'mon Roy give the guy more game time.

4. Ayew played a blinder the rest of the team did well considering.

5. We never get any luck against Arsenal.

Bit disappointed but they were a lot better. Would they have scored without a pen and 11 men all game. Who knows but looked relieved at the end. Says a lot about us imo.
Move on and defensively we were pretty sound, especially at corners which have been our weakness in the past.

Good summing up, i think with Olise, Franca and the hopefully new striker, the team will get what it was missing last night, Schlupp has been the only player who has had two poor games, JRS should start against Brentford, when the deadline is over and the international break, we should see what we have.

Lerma and Doucoure are good players and give us a sold look.
However, this is at the expense of our attacking play.

Essentially we're playing two 6s and one 8 rather than two 8s and one 6.
It makes Eze easier to mark and leaves him isolated which could be a problem in the absence of Zaha/Olise.
Until we get more flair in the team I would like one of Lerma and Doucoure to sit and the other to break forward.
They could alternate in this regard.
We have excellent central defenders who don't need 2 sitting midfield players in front of them.

I disagree. The fact is the full backs don't have what it takes to get up and support the attack when the opportunity arises. Whether this is through instruction from the manager I don't know.

Pretty balance view from everyone!

Reasonably good performance against a top team. They had a couple of chances and had to really dig in.

Stick Wilf and Olise in that team and I think we would have scored.

Nice to see JRS and Ahmada get some minutes. Couldn't deliver but definitely upped hte attacking intent.

Also encouraged to see some of Roys subs, e.g. taking off Ward. Cant remember him doing things like that before.

I was convinced Sam got the ball for the penalty from my view in the Whitehorse, but having got home and seen it again, I need to apologise to the ref for calling him a bent b******
So frustrating though, like the city game last season, to match the top teams and lose only by a penalty is gutting.
Good performance though, shame we couldn’t cause them more problems in front of goal, but we’ve got to remember who we were playing and we defended well against them

Yes, spot on, we should consider converting Ozoh into a right back, give him six months playing the role in the U21s then introduce him in the second half of the season. and Adaramola needs to be loaned to help his development or benched
