Saw an interesting article on transfer fees yesterday - Currently transfer fees can be spread over the length of the players contract - however because Chelsea had started offering players lengthy contracts (6 years plus, One contract being 8 .5 years) spreading the transfer fee over all of those contract years to soften their FFP impact, UEFA have now decided that going forward (probably from the summer) the maximum number of years a players transfer fee can be spread over is 5 years -

It's painful to think that we're probably paying Macca, Luka, Butland, Tomkins, and Ferguson the better part of £350k a week collectively this season to play a total of maybe ten matches between them all season. Next year, that money should be funding at least five decent new players at £75k a week each who are actually contributing on the pitch. Sweeping out the deadwood alone will make a massive difference as we will be putting the cash we are wasting now to good use. Edited by sydtheeagle (24 Jan 2023 9.13pm) Yes, that is the crux of the problem, we waste too much money, whether its wages or fees, you can almost add Edouard to the list above, i dont see any point in wasting money in this window, the younger players need game time, yes a loan or two only

Of course I am not suggesting we go out and buy 6/7 players but a bit more than nothing would be nice. It does seem as though we are still trying to simultaneously rectify previous, unwise transfer dealings which were probably made through a more desperate state of play and implement our new approach which is a delicate balancing act. It seems quite natural from my perspective and if anything should signify a new dawn for our club, moving from the perennial relegation battle to stability and building for the future. Come match day and another game without a win however and I suspect most fans will draw up a long list of what we need and what 'should' have been done in the transfer window. This view may just be reflected in PV's stance also.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Regardless of the transfer budget, I think we SHOULD be blooding youngsters. If we don't, what's the point of a world-class academy? I'm not saying count on them; but to me using Ozoh for a few minutes last weekend made far more sense than using Jairo yet again. Ozoh might be the future. Jairo definitely is not. PV shouldn't need to be told to do that. As for our recruitment, I'd argue that we're not regularly out-performed by others. What we are is out-budgeted (which is different0, but the players we do manage to bring in on our limited budget have a reasonable hit-rate in the past couple of years compared to the signings of many other teams. Our recruitment itself doesn't need to get better. We just need more to spend on it. The debate about selection of players from the Academy goes back to the Hodgson era. And the answer is the same now as it was then. If they are considered good enough, they will get their chance. I watch the majority of the U18 and U21 games. Collectively they are two decent teams, competing well in their leagues. Individually it's a different story. Players can be part of a good team but the players are developing at different paces from one another. From what I've seen - and obviously only my opinion - Tayo Adaramola was rightly given some first team action last season but he doesn't seem to have pushed on this season. I like the look of John-Kymani Gordon, now on loan at Carlisle. Jack Wells-Morrison looks like he's coming along nicely. The stand out is David Ozoh. I think he looks a player. Re the Academy, as Willo pointed out the other day, they will become mandatory anyway. There's no guarantees that it will produce a conveyor belt of players for the first team but in order to compete for the best talent, we have to have the facilities.

And why do you think making a permanent signing in this window will be a waste of money ?

I’m a big fan of PV. My anxiety is that he will get fed up with the failure to land his targets and walk. Not saying that’s imminent but I do think it’s a risk in the medium term.

I think Vieira has done okay. Around par. The football has been better but I feel he benefited for a good while from the monotonous discipline that Roy drilled into us. Plus three fantastic signings last season, one being Gallagher. I have seen signs we are getting a little ragged and, with it, brittle. He's also gone more defensive lately, has he not? But in the end similar results to Roy. Have to say the spending in the division is insane. Risky just to try to keep up
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

For me, exactly this. And it IS a problem, even if not today. Vieira is patient and measured, but he's also ambitious. He probably accepts that we're not going to compete with the big six or seven, but at some point he won't accept failing to compete with Brighton, Brentford, Fulham, etc. He'll say he's done his part by improving the players we have; in his eyes, it's time for the board to do their part and improve the raw materials at his disposal. When you've finally found a decent, reasonably successful manager who is broadly well-liked by the fans, as a board you're playing with fire if you risk losing him due to your lack of ambition. And Vieira's demands don't seem unreasonable either; he's not asking us to go out and sign Harry Kane. His targets broadly seem sensible and realistic but the club appears completely incapable of bringing them in while equivalent teams around us do their own business with relative ease in comparison. Something needs to change, hopefully in the next five days.

It has however been reported that he is frustrated by our lack of recruits. That does not necessarily mean he is blaming the club it may be that he is frustrated by the market.
