I have to say, I do agree with this. I probably gave more patience than many to Benteke but now it seems like he has completely moved into retirement and I doubt he'll get much more than a cameo in the remaining games as Vieira clearly wants his players to at least break a sweat. Mateta still looks like Bambi on ice but he has clearly taken on board this fact and now runs around and closes players down. I still don't understand why Edouard has had so little game time down the middle though? I know he hasn't exactly torn up trees but he is the only one of the three who seems to have a proper striker's instinct and I really hope he gets a run of games. Sorry to any Ayew fans but I just don't see him as a striker.

I suspect you are right that this is very much the issue with Benteke. Benteke's scoring form was actually reasonable during the 2021 calendar year (Yes contract up for renewal and new contract bounce in the early part of this season). HOWEVER, the way he just jogged around when he came off the bench in games since then (and especially against Liverpool) was more than disappointing. Sadly, he is a one trick pony and that trick is wearing thin now.

Is it April 1st already? The most ridiculous post from an otherwise sensible poster I have seen on these pages. Benteke's record speaks for itself, he's a lazy gravy train riding waste of space. PV has realised it by not selecting him, funny that...

It was actually a well reasoned and insightful comment - even for the Benteke haters. Did you even read it in detail, or just clock that it went against the anti Benteke agenda and instantly dismiss it.

Just on the Benteke thread i do think he might be a square peg in a round hole under Viera. Our formation and style under Viera is not unlike Liverpool's and one of the early things Klopp did was move on Benteke. There are teams he will be better suited to Burnley been one that springs to mind.

That's a fair comment, doombear. I honestly try and ignore the ridiculous posts about Mateta being the saviour etc...I really do. But I just can't do it. Plus to be fair, this is a thread specifically titled 'centre forwards'. So it's sort of justified debate on this thread. Will try not to overtake other threads from now on.

I don't recall anyone saying he is the saviour he is just above average which goes to show how poor the others CFs are, Mateta is the best of a bad bunch, why would PV choose him above the others, unless you think PV is Clueless

I read it. Curious how it started by saying Benteke's not that good, but.... then shifts to how he scored a few at the end of last season, to he offers something a bit different, to he is the best of what we have.
Firstly, he's not that good, in fact he's much worse.
Secondly, he scored a few under a the previous manager at the end of the season when he was fishing for a new contract - he had a cushy number under Roy.
Thirdly, yeah I guess so. What it is though let me know when you've found it.
Fourthly, I don't think so, and neither does PV.

Happy to second your comment Sprites.

Benteke is an asset in offering something others cannot. He's a very likeable character for me so I personally find it hard to hate him. Just needs to be crystal clear on what he can and cannot bring to a game (wordplay intended).

Edouard is looking a bit lightweight since he arrived, that cameo at Spurs still looking to be his best performance. Might also argue he needs time to adjust to the league and team and vice versa. Thought he was a fantastic acquisition at the time.

Mateta - Good movement, tall, seems technically capable, young but yet to be convinced of him as a 'finished article'. Very much see him as an Origi character, may have decent spells but struggle to see him developing to become 'prolific'. What do I know though eh?

Ayew - Not Russia, apologies, meant 'not a striker'.

My diagnosis would be that each of these players has the potential and opportunity to become 1st choice however none of them have grabbed that. Equally, I'd still be reluctant to write anybody off just yet though Benteke has had his time. Perhaps this is what Vieira is holding out for but should the time come, you'd like to think we'd still look for that 1st choice man and perhaps move on those that become deadwood and keep those who still have something to offer squad.

Also, just a final point. It's something that gets said a lot, including probably by me, but I really do have a gripe with this notion of young players having 'potential' as if it is a given. F***ing Michael Owen peaked at 18 and just because you're half decent when young doesn't mean you will automatically get better and better down the years. Random rant of a cerebral challenged lunatic for today!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

When the midfield is not functioning properly (as in tonight) it would be helpful to have a focal point up front to allow us to link up the midfield and wide players.
Despite the well documented problems with Benteke in terms of lack of mobility and missed chances, he's still probably our best option to provide that focal point.
I'm not suggesting that he should start every week, but I still think there are games where he could perform a role.

Will be interesting to see what happens this summer. Looks like all four of our strikers could move on. Plus Eze. None of them can hold down a place in the team, probably because they aren’t quite good enough. However PV seems to be squeezing out the best from them. His rotation seems to be working well. Must be an advantage all4 strikers and PV have French as their first language.

He's not. Nowhere near. End of. Let's move on...everyone's getting sick of us.

At the beginning of the seasons Benteke and Edouard started together and actually looked decent as a partnership. Then PV never started them again.

Benteke is the only player who can win the ball in the air or hold up play. Edouard is only player who can finish. Mateta, for all his height rarely wins a battle but does work hard and tbf isn’t afraid to shoot and that creates chances for us (against Watford scored because he shot, last night his shot meant kouyate scored). So I’d like to see a return of the benteke edouard (or mateta) partnership against teams worse than us (like Stoke and Burnley).

For much of this season the central striker has had Zaha and Ayew either side of him.
Neither are adept at picking out the striker in the penalty area with passes or crosses.
Zaha often plays with his head down and looks to cut in and look for shooting opportunities.
Ayew undoes his hard work when in good crossing positions by not looking up and finding a teammate.
He invariably hits the first defender or finds the keeper.
For the Stoke goal yesterday Sawyers got past Hughes on the byline, looked up and picked out his teammate to slot in the goal.
Edouard did this for the Mateta goal v Norwich, Olise for Gallagher's goal v Man City but examples are few and far between.
With Olise increasingly getting starts I hope the service to the striker improves.
It's a thankless task expecting Zaha or Ayew, for all their other attributes, to put the ball on a plate for the striker from wide positions.
