I too, have written to complain but don't expect a reply.

The stupidity of the penalty decision was all over my Times today with all the pundits, even Gary Lineka!, condemning it.

As Peter Walton said:
'VAR should not have intervened' and that is it in a nutshell.

Not sure about a conspiracy to favour the top teams but as many have pointed out lots of minor decisions went against us.

Refereeing is a difficult job with millions on TV and around the world ready to examine the slightest error but I really do think that the FA and PL should not close ranks and ignore this.

I know what reaction Messrs Friend and Pawson will get on their next visits to Selhurst.

As a final aside: Joel Ward is proving what a good captain he is, especially after Olise's bad fall. Luka is not the right man for the job and Ward should be given the band permanently.

The game at that point was strongly in our favour. Arguably this would have upset the narrative that Friend was going along with. Quite clearly Jota alters trajectory to run into Guaita, it's there for all to see and all who have seen it have remarked upon it - Jota ran purposefully into Guaita. Friend can see it, and yet he still awards the penalty. From an empirical point of view, i.e. his decision making throughout the game, it is not difficult to reach the assumption that the game was corrupted by a corrupt official.

Liverpool, we’re in for a very tense last ten minutes. And this decision took them right off the hook. It’s getting a bit to obvious for my liking..
Others have made some interesting points from other parts of the game. The second Liverpool goal , offside no doubt. The guy was trying to head that ball to the distraction of the defenders. Benteke, was clearly on side. When breaking clear.
And if you watch the game on replay you can read Friends lips , severely warning Gallagher, before he had barely touched the ball it was not far short of I’m going to have you. If you get tucked into them. That has to say a lot. Absolutely ridiculous..
Big teams , contentious decisions has been going on for years. It’s about time it was called out for what it is, cheating.

Dear Sirs,

As a Palace fan I looked forward to the game yesterday but after a few minutes there seemed something wrong.

As a Palace fan I looked forward to the game yesterday but after a few minutes there seemed something wrong.

Gallagher was warned in the first few minutes after a tackle.

There were 30+ minutes on the clock before Palace were given a free kick

There were a number of incidents where a hand ball was spotted if by a Palace player but was ignored if it were a Liverpool player

Some fouls were ignored while others in similar situations ie the ref was close by were ignored.

To get to the important points why did the VAR team not advise Mr Friend that Firminho (?) was in an offside position and had attempted to play the ball

Why was Jota not booked for an intentional foul on Guaita and instead a penalty (eventually) was given.

I have watched football for over 40 years and seen many games where the ref seemed not entirely neutral but this was the worst refereeing I have ever seen.

I too have emailed a complaint. Basically calling into question the integrity of the league if such a biased refereeing display is allowed to go unpunished
I do not expect a reply

The only way this will stop is with the Ref's being held accountable. And that starts with them giving their explanations for decisions after the match.
At the moment, they go back to the referee's association blame what a hard time they've got, everyone agrees, and they take a punishment of 2 days hard introspection. probably.

I get that they've got a hard job, and standing in front of a pack of hungry media types baying for blood isn't particularly appealing to them, but they are bringing it on themselves. Even if they simply submitted a publicly available report on their processes/decisions, that would be better than the 'ref and run' mentality they have at the moment.

perhaps a petition is in order!

Id like to think that it's incompetence over corruption, but how can a ref be quite so incompetent. Friend actually overturned his correct decision. It's like the 'clear and obvious error' was that it wasn't sufficiently in Liverpools favour.

Perhaps refs Simply hate VAR so much that trying to discredit it.
So frustrating, as VAR as a tool is perfectly suitable. it's how it's been applied is so incredibly galling

Agree with most of that. But of course VAR is not a machine, it’s another ref.
It’s faulty refereeing , and it’s about time that in its self was seriously looked at.
A petition maybe,, but it’s the big money movers that are the premier league that need to get this in order.
As for VAR, let’s face it ,it’s TV that has brought VAR into the game, VAR is here to stay, because if there was no VAR TV would constantly blow refs out of the water anyway..
I have never questioned the idea that refs are fair in the main, until recent years, and yesterday was to bad to not question How two so called top refs could get it so wrong. It’s worrying on both counts ,incompetence, or something else.

The odd one with the penalty is that unlike many other contentious decisions is that even Liverpool fans are saying it wasn't a penalty. Normally if there's any sniff of doubt then the fans that benefit will defend the decision to the hilt. The other odd thing was the suggestion that Pawson may have been making amends for the criticism he got for failing to give a penalty to Newcastle when the GK clearly did wipe out the player. To me that would be worrying in the extreme if he couldn't see the difference between the two incidents.

I would love to see how many questionable decisions have gone in favour of Liverpool and Man Utd when playing teams outside the so-called big 6 in recent years as I honestly can't remember a smaller club getting the rub of the green against these two. Another recent example being Rashford's offside goal against Spam.

If gmail would recognise the ref email address then this is what I would have sent:

To whom it may concern,

I wish to add my voice to the loud chorus of fans, pundits, ex-players, managers, and referees regarding the appallingly incompetent performance by Mr Friend and Mr Pawson during the Palace / Liverpool game yesterday (Sunday 23/1/2022).
I expect you have seen the comments regarding their performance across the media and from fan groups. I will highlight just one decision made by the pair, one of many professional failings to ensure that the rules of the game were enforced in a neutral manner, notably an incorrect call that killed the game just when Palace were on top.
To view the penalty incident on a monitor for a number of minutes and not see that the player Jota has deliberately altered his run to collide with the Palace keeper when he (Jota) has lost the ball is beyond the realms of credibility. Jota blatantly cheated to gain an advantage.
Frankly the performance of Mr Friend and Mr Pawson has brought the game into disrepute, so much so that the time worn allegations of big club favouritism and corruption have resurfaced.
It is imperative for the FA to issue a statement on the matter and preferably sanction the two officials in some way to dispel any further allegations regarding the integrity of the game.

Yours sincerely,

and this was my effort to the FA (waiting without baited breath for a response!)
*************************************************************

I urge the Referees committee to review the performances of Kevin Friend and Craig Pawson today at Selhurst Park.

Aside from not stopping the game when Olise had a big fall on to his neck the fiasco of the Liverpool being awarded a penalty

following the collision between Jota and Guaita was reprehensible and brings the reputation of PL referees and especially VAR into disrepute.

Mr Friend (who had an unobstructed view of the incident) originally gave a goal kick but Craig Pawson on VAR asked him to check the monitor. After the usual delay the decision was changed to a penalty.

It was obvious to all except Mr Friend and Mr Pawson that Jota had lost control of the ball before he collided with the goalkeeper.

Kevin Friend is usually a reliable referee but today he was not and seemed to favour Liverpool.

However, my main complaint is with the use of VAR. A possible offside for Liverpool's second was not investigated.

In previous seasons referees were discouraged from viewing the monitor - now they seem to be encouraged to do so. That is fair enough except when the man in charge at Stockley Park interferes unnecessarily !

We do not have a good selection of reliable referees and that is worrying but I must say I was most impressed with

Robert Jones in the Brighton v. Palace game. He was excellent and, vitally, fair in that game.

Yours sincerely
Richard Johns

(Palace fan since 1948 !)

Absolutely seething as well, but just to add to the incompetence of Friend. Being last man, denying a clear goalscoring opportunity upon giving the ridiculous decision should he have sent VG off ??. Very surprised he didn’t even get a yellow. I sincerely hope the FA do something, but fear they won’t.
