Due to poor government planning it looks like we've exchanged it for expensive labour imported without a care of the effects. As for housing, certainly immigration plays a part in that, however the number of houses built even without that is pitiful. I think we need to accept that government prefer and indeed intended (and still intend) for housing prices to spiral out of control. Cheap Llabour (more often from outside of the EU) will continue, and there will be no meaningful effort to build enough houses to make a dent in demand. They are pushing for a renter nation. That's not a criticism of Brexit mind you, and this is I expect the intention whether in or out of the EU. Other than what Brexit symbolically means to people, I have come to think that the government and their mates will do all that can be personally profit from the changes it brings, and nothing of substance or benefit will filter through to Joe Public. As per usual. Yes this is possible. But just who are the landlords? It will be left wing as well as right wing voters accumulating property. Just one side aren’t hypocrites about it. Unless we’re okay with the Chinese owning all our accommodation as well. Why not? We’re willing to roll over on everything else. We’ve shown we’re ripe for invasion for a while. Perhaps this is the modern war and white flag we’ll probably wave like the pathetic lot we’ve become.

Perhaps this is the modern war and white flag we’ll probably wave like the pathetic lot we’ve become. A mixed bag politically no doubt, but generally people who are very well off will have bigger portfolios and be closer to the ear of politicians. Politicians themselves are often landlords are so unfortunately have skin in the game. I would like to believe that there is the will in some quarters to do something about this problem, but feel that a tipping has has been reached where even many home owners are happy with it (seeing their home as a shrewd financial move, rather than a place to rest their head). You make some good points and of course today we also see that billions of pounds worth of (often empty) properties are owned by a rogues gallery of types through shell accounts. No surprise of course, but telling that the government is always 'looking into it' rather than doing anything about actually forcing disclosure of who owns what. So any person or nation can already make the situation worse if they so desire. I'm support any party that changed housing roles to the extent that many thousands of small, basic but perfectly liveable housing units could be built. Very basic starter homes if you like, that would at least offer people options rather than getting screwed over by a life of renting with nothing to show for it (where people do not want to rent of course), and would also put a bit of downward pressure of house prices for a change. This is perfectly doable, but of course won't happen.

You always need to question what you read. The Tories love it when you just suck it up. I question what I read and don't just suck it up. Firstly, the article points out that: Febetra pointed to the United Kingdom, where the consequences of a shortage of lorry drivers are evident, as the country is facing fuel shortages and empty shelves in supermarkets are seen because they cannot be supplied. Secondly, the article points out that: In the meantime, Carrefour shops across Belgium are still experiencing issues following a strike at the Logistics Nivelles distribution centre at the start of the week. So workers are going for better wages presumably. Good on them.

This country better get used to shortages because our infrastructure will soon begin to fail under the weight of so many immigrants arriving legal and illegal. Don't say you weren't warned. Blaming Brexit is pure politics. Just like ancient Rome. You do not know what you are talking about. The article was showing a picture that referred to the (definately BREXs***) problems in the UK but was actually due to a Belgian strike. You Brexiters grabbed it like flotsum in a f***ing storm but it is as real as the bus rubbish you gullible sillies. Also Your immigration rant does not belong in the world of things that are true. We have been supposedly drowning under the weight of immigration since the 50s. Personally I am ok with the good things immigration brings and they out weigh the bad.

It's not my propaganda piece. It is a news website and magazine based in Brussels. I don't think the Tories have any editorial influence. The point is that countries that did not leave the EU are suffering similar shortages , in this case HGV drivers, as the UK. I am glad you haven't been sucked up, and if there is any insult regarding intelligence it's your inability to spell the word correctly.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

If you let the government destroy unions and let the papers destroy any talk of oppositon what is left? We had much higher immigration in the 50s but the immigrants mainly came into unionised jobs. There was a labour shortage then too, after the war, but because working class people were not dumbed down by a Tory press and knew what the neoliberalism actually meant they were not fooled. Now a significant minority of working people actually believe a man that loves Thatcher, was a member of the austerity cabinet and is essentially a believer in neoliberalism will bring high wages through a few jokes. Sad f***s

A friend of mine did mushroom for 18 months and was perfectly happy with his version of what was what. Crazy as a march hare but happy to discuss and put forward his ideas on the ways things were. I didn't buy his story and I certainly don't buy yours. For clarity: the article you posted to disingenuously prove that the countries in Europe were also suffering supply problems was showing shelves empty because of a strike in Belgium.

I've tried to find stats on that but couldn't in the limited time I did it for. However, it can be said that the post war immigration was controversial as is the argument that it was required....except for a low wage economy as I find your contention that it was for mostly union jobs point doubtful....in reality it would have been mixed along the lower wage employment areas. Regardless the statistics for net immigration in the UK from 75 can be seen here. Edited by Stirlingsays (07 Oct 2021 2.32pm) Attachment: netimmigration.JPG (108.97Kb)
