If he’s the worst player in our squad, we’ll be ok.

I was as dismayed as everybody else when the Arsenal stole 2 points from us right at the end of added time last night. I really felt for PV - he so wanted that win. As others have said, we had luck, and for once, a referree on our side. But, one thing did interest me, and it was their goal celebration. You'd have thought that this so called 'big six' club had won the cup rather than scrape a draw with lil' ol' Palace. To me this is a clear sign that we have become, in just 8 league games, a PL team to be taken seriously. We are no longer a pushover and regarded as the underdogs. A spirited performance from a team, with one or two exceptions, that are, now, such a joy to watch. Well done to PV and the team. We are going to have a great season.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

The last 10 to 15 minutes were awful. We couldn't hold the ball and just wacked it away. Subs were bizarre too. When Tierney hit the bar Ward was dragged inside instead of picking him up, but we had 3 centre backs at that point so it shows how disorganised we were at that time. I also notice throws in and set pieces are as bad as under Roy. How hard is it to practice these and use a little imagination?? We are moving in the right direction but we need to play for 95 minutes and not 20 or so minutes here and there

I can't actually remember us playing football as well as this since Steve Bruce was in charge. Yes the last 2 games have ended in a harsh way and I also have some concern about the number of goals we are conceding from set pieces but in reality we have looked fairly comfortable in most games this season. There is a buzz about us now.. Under Roy, if we went one down the general consensus was game over. Under Viera I now find myself expecting us to get back into the game if we concede. Even against Liverpool, despite the scoreline we caused them problems and had opportunities to draw level and even go ahead. The future is bright. It is still a work in progress and we need to iron out a few little things. You have to remember that Viera is learning to.. And his decision to bring Tomkins and alter our playing style for the last 15 minutes is something he will learn from. What is important now is that we start taking points off the teams around us which I'm sure we will. Edited by kennybrowns leftfoot (19 Oct 2021 1.54pm)

I really don’t get all this Viera bashing. The guy has done more for us in 8 games than any manger of recent times has done. Comments about naivety are just bull. The guy has more experience of all of us here put together. How So whilst we think it should have been Shluppy rather than JT, let’s just temper with the fact that the dude has a more qualified POV than we do. On another day JT clears one off the line and Viera is a genius. It’s a game of such small margins. The results will come, we have had statistically the hardest start and we are still bossing seriously good teams.

Interesting. And if Guehi hadn't missed one right under the crossbar at the end of the West Ham match, we'd be on 14 and had Schlupp's shot on 88 minutes against Leicester gone the other side of the post, even a sublime 16!

Firstly, I have compared our results of this season to the same fixtures last season (I have taken Brentford out of the equation as they weren't in the PL last year). So in those 7 matches played so far we have gained 7pts, compared to 5pts last season - the difference being the winning against Spurs as opposed to drawing. Otherwise, the outcome of the matches have been the same this season as last ( not score-wise but point-wise). Goals for and against this season 10-13 , last season 4-10. So we have scored more but conceded more in 21/22. Secondly, if we compare points gained in the first 8 games of 21/22 to 20/21 we see that we currently have 8pts compared to 13pts at the same stage last year. Last season saw us win 4 of our first 8 as opposed to a single win this season. Last season we had lost 3 games by this stage as opposed to 2 this season. I appreciate this doesn't necessarily mean a lot as you have to consider the strength of the teams being played. We have had some challenging fixtures to date - although in the same period last year we did face Chelsea, Man Utd and Everton. However, those 13 pts provided a good foundation for a season where we never became embroiled in a relegation battle. Of course, but for those last second goals conceded against Brighton and Arsenal, we would be sitting happily on 12 points instead of 8. Let's hope those dropped point don't prove costly.

And I don't doubt that he knows more about the game than anyone on here. As did Hodgson. But we all have an opinion. Mine is that he made a mistake in bringing Tomkins on. But as you rightly say, it's fine margins - if we had held out at 2-1 we would have been applauding another masterful substitution !

Not sure we can handle an aerial bombardment with a couple of big men up front. Hopefully, our football will win out. I largely agree with your sentiments.
