In another thread I have been arguing for the removal of religion from public life, and requiring that those who believe perform their acts of worship in private. Alongside of this would be the removal of all religious teaching, and influence, from any faith, in schools, where all children would be taught about religion, but not a religion. In other threads, others argue for freedom of speech and bemoan attempts by social media platforms to exercise any kind of control over what users can post. Andrew Torba's Gab has no such controls. He regularly promotes his personal visions on his site, and his blog the latest of which can be found here:- [Link] If you cannot be bothered to read it all, do read the first few paragraphs. Dominionist attitudes like this are very dangerous, in my opinion. Although predominately a USA phenomenon, the thinking that underlies them is creeping under our door and, in any case, what happens in the USA impacts us too. Free speech is easy to defend and difficult to condemn, but when ideas like this are promulgated, the case I make for ensuring children receive an alternative point of view at school is overwhelmingly obvious. Society has a right to be freely heard, too! Remember, Torba also promotes anti-vax misinformation and is vehemently opposed to masks.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

As you say what happens in America does affect us but there’s a tendency in Britain to think of Americans as being “just like us” and they’re not really. Religion, or at least some interpretation of it, in America is a lot more import to a lot of people than it is here.

That's how I see it anyway. Whether they are into religion or not doesn't make much difference to me, but what does is where their allegiance is.

I find Americans to be far more polarised in terms of personality/mind set/culture than Europeans. I have got on with most Europeans I have met, but only really those Americans from the East/West coast or big cities. But then I guess America is huge isn't it.

I think you're talking about Democrat/Republican mindsets. America certainly is huge and unless it splits its destiny is Hispanic and gradual economic decline......though not at the speed Biden is currently taking it.

Quite a few people definitely usually Republican voters. Although very few Trump voters.

Probably higher support than Biden has in the Democratic party. Not that I support a Trump 2024 bid......these guys are way too old....not so much anti Trump as anti ancient. Edited by Stirlingsays (02 Nov 2021 6.16pm) Whilst I realised that Trump had regained some ground after the Jan 6th debacle, I found this a surprising claim as I got the impression from my Trump supporting US friends that his status was on the slide. It turns out I am right. Not by nearly enough to make me feel comfortable, but it isn't 80%. More like 67%, with less than 50% wanting him to run in 2024. So it looks to me as though they want him to be a kingmaker, and not the king. Don't myself see him being too happy about that. Stats from:- [Link]

Whatever people think of Trump, he's never someone you can count out, and on the Dem side with Biden we see how absolutely ropey some opponents can be. A lot can happen between now and 2024 but currently Trump has be to current favourite to be GOP nominee for 2024 even at these slightly diminished levels of support.

We're getting off the subject here but, if you are right, what do you think would happen if he was the nominee? Clearly, the bulk of the Republicans would vote for him, even if some might do so reluctantly. I cannot though see too many of the genuinely independent, whose swing votes are critical, forgiving him for either the style of his previous Presidency, or the events on Jan 6th. Provided the Democrats put up someone credible, preferably younger, vibrant, empathetic and charismatic, then they ought to romp home. If they were also a woman, then even more likely. I am pretty sure it won't be Biden again. He will have served his purpose. I think this is why Harris is currently adopting a pretty low profile. She needs to avoid picking up any mud, so she can enter the contest untarnished by events. Mind you, we haven't heard much recently from Ivanka either. We could yet see an all female election.

Good question. I really don't see it as a good thing if he was to win the Presidency for instance (I kind of see him as an Internet troll come to life, but with actual powers to disrupt and dismantle), but then it's hard not to be underwhelmed by the Dems leadership too. Biden is pretty woeful in my view and actual candidates of principle with something about them like Sanders (whether or not all agree with them) routinely get derailed by their party system. Trump essentially managed to hack the system at least by winning the nomination, but I think it was more an act of political vandalism and an F you, rather than a vote for someone who was going to improve much. A number of legal situations may further complicate the picture prior to 2024 [Link] You're likely right that independents wouldn't be able to countenance voting for him, so then much of it would likely come down to democrat and republican turnout. Along the lines of what you say I don't see Biden as particularly inspiring anyone (he sends himself to sleep!), and can't see him winning in 2024, so in all likelihood it will be Harris. I can see her replacing Biden after the midterms perhaps, as that would give her more of a claim to the presidency and put her stamp on things. She's not the ideal candidate either, but since when did they ever end up in the Whitehouse! Edited by BlueJay (03 Nov 2021 5.16am)
