Hughes is the sort of bread and butter, unspectacular "glue" player that really good clubs rely on; the sort who doesn't get the headlines and you only notice when he's not there. But then, boy do you notice him. Think Martin Hinshelwood if you're a long-term Palace fan. Dare I mention PV's teammate Ray Parlour in this context?

I remember Hughes scoring a cracker at Anfield for Watford few years ago. He's a top player.

Well if he's seen both Hughes and Luka play - and he obviously has - then he pretty clearly has a way of knowing that, and at least a right to his opinion. Not saying his opinion is any more or less valid than anyone else's, but it's pointless saying he has zero way of knowing that when he does. For the record, I agree with him. As for an in-form Luka being better than Hughes, when was the last time we saw an in-form Luka for any serious run of games? I mean, George Best is better than Hughes but right now, probably not.

But then, boy do you notice him. Think Martin Hinshelwood if you're a long-term Palace fan. As for Sissoko, I'd much rather have Hughes personally. Sissoko had a ten-minute spectacular period before signing for Spurs for a huge wedge and has done relatively little since to live up to the fee. He's the sort who's absolutely dominant when motivated and could be world-class if he had a mindset like Ronaldo but he doesn't and he isn't. He's motivated for a month or two once every couple of years. With Hughes, you get 80% of Sissoko's ability 100% of the time. With Sissoko, you get 60% of Sissoko's ability 40% of the time. The only place Sissoko is better than Hughes is on paper. This is an excellent explanation of a very important point when it comes to to assessing footballers (or anyone else for that matter): It's not about what you can do, it's about what you do. I've heard it described as 'The lie of potential' or something like that - a disproportionate fixation on what seems to be the upper limit of a persons ability rather than their output.

Put another way, the meaning of the word "potential" is essentially someone who's never delivered. Hear the word applied to a player and you'd do well to run a mile. No one talks about Ronaldo's potential. Or Lukaku's potential. Or Kane's potential. They don't have to. But players who have underachieved time and time again, they're the ones we're told have "potential". In other words, potential = wasted talent.

As we are distributing the ball through the centre backs or going long now, the pressure will be off Luka this season. In the last couple of years we tried to play everything through him. It's not his strong point and the team were so static to the formation there weren't any options. We hung him out to dry on many occasions. I think he'll have a much better season this year.

Thanks for this Syd. I was pretty much going to write the same message to him myself.

Which is really important considering Macca is getting older, and missed a lot of last season through injury. Watford have brought Sissoko in as a bit of a stop gap, whilst they figure out the long term. He'll likely start ok, but it wouldn't surprise me if he's not in the team come the end of the season.

Good Macca replacement. The lad has ability and was obtained at good value too.

For me Hughes is a player well worth us having, It’s often hard to know what any criticism is really based on.
