A failure for the team but does that make the individual a failure?

As has been stated in a thread on the Transfer board, the following players were relegated from the top division:
- Roy Keane (Notts F.)
- Harry Maguire (Hull C)
- Andy Robertson (Hull C)
- Gini Wijnaldum (Newcastle U)
Does that make them failures? Of course not. Likewise I suggest it's nonsense to suggest that Andersen and Gallagher are failures simply because they were relegated from the PL in poor teams.

Yes. When trudging off, after the final whistle, it is a failure both individually and collectively, but you know that. You can find good players in 30 plus years who've been relegated. If Connor and Andersen have the quality of the four you mentioned, I will be delighted. There wasn't too much evidence of that last season.

I'm very much in the PV over transfer activity camp as to how well this goes down.

What interests me is that we are building the team from the back at least insofar as money spent goes. This will likely be Dougie of course but PV's reputation and record is actually of a manager who has a decent defence and dries goals up going forward!

I understand the optimism of having a new manager who is not committed to low block but passing the ball around doesn't always translate into more goals - just prettier football to watch.

Indeed. Brighton spring to mind (although I have a feeling they will do very well this season &#128577

So far the transfer window has been awesome. The "deadwood" shipped out and was replaced with young, quality players. If we can add one out of Lookman, Reis Nelson on loan from Arsenal, or Blackburn striker Armstrong (Southampton-bound it seems), it would almost be too good to be true.
Now let us hope the manager can put out a side that gives 100% in each game, we can never ask for more.

Yep, one of Lookman or Reis Nelson would be great.

I know it will take some time for the injured to get back and the team to bed in, but we're assembling a really exciting set of players

With the number of subs increased back up there is no way have enough players for a full bench. On my calculations we lost 9 in the summer with only 5 coming in one of whom is long term injured to add to the 2 long term injuries we already have. I think we need a min of 3 further players to bolster the squad otherwise it’s bare bones again.

are you not taking into account Rak-Sakyi, Banks, Hamman, Boateng, Rich-Baghuelou, Wells-Morrison and Omilabu

Most if not all of those youngsters will not need to be included in the squad of 25 names submitted to the league after the window closes. They can be first team squad players, of course. What is looking very likely is that we won't have 25 names on that list, not that we need to if our youngsters are the ones who will be coming off the bench. There's no need to make up the numbers of 21yo and over to 25 if they aren't likely to feature in the matches or on the bench.

I’m with you on this. If we end up with a long injury list then the young players we know are close to coming through, will not carry us through. Introducing one or two throughout the season is fine, we will soon know if their time has come, but actually thinking we can rely on four or five totally untried under twenty threes if we go through periods as we have in previous seasons of being left with the bare bones of the experienced squad is a pipe dream. It’s a minimum of two for me, though it probably does need three.

Yes wasn't it Alan Hansen that said you win nothing with kids ! I think most of us agree this is a transition year and if at the end of it 4/5 from the academy get the odd game then great. After all we could lose 20 games and still finish 15th or 16th.

Having seen Banks for 10 mins v Watford in the flesh made me realise what a talent he is. He will almost certainly have a run or two this season.

Although I get the feeling we will sign 2 more players, one on loan, I agree. This is a transition season, we can hopefully discover one or two decent players from our youngsters. It probably won't be a great season but think we will stay up. The next season, however, we should actually play good football and have some youngsters with games under their belts. Fingers crossed anyhow.
