The question you asked in the third paragraph was answered more than adequately in the first. realistically if our next manager lasts more than 2-years we will massively exceed the current average tenure. It's a tricky one with regards to contract terms - we as a club need to show commitment but also protect the club if it's not working. I'd expect the new chap to be offered 3-years, however if he lasts two (for better or worse) then I think that we'll be doing very well by today's standards. I'd like to think that if he's doing well after 2 seasons he'd be interested in taking us further! Survival in the Prem should no longer be our measure of success. It's not an achievement as far as I'm concerned

Announcing he's jumping ship before the crowd turns on him against Arsenal. Typical cowardice by Teflon Roy. Great news for football in England. I'm surprised you can bring your knuckles up from the floor long enough to type, let alone spell. Odious little ****.

You won't be punished for that as someone called me a moron a couple of weeks ago and no action was taken so a precedent has now been set. Moron isn't the words that I would use as I prefer a type of fish but I can't remember what it's called. It's not a lemon sole or dover sole so it must be a different type of sole Sole? Ah, sole!

Although I knew this day would come, now or a bit later, my overriding feeling is one of sadness. In part it's because of the 'passing of time'/'end of an era' aspect, but also the expectation that I will never see his like again at this club.

I would like to echo the kind sentiments of the majority of the posters on this thread which I believe represent the views of the vast majority of Palace fans. Roy has kept us up comfortably in each of the seasons he has been in charge. The timing of the announcement will hopefully mean that the new man can be brought in quickly, so that outstanding contractual issues can now be resolved and that the players who will be here next season will have the wholehearted support of the new manager. Enjoy your retirement Roy!

I’m the first to admit I’ve posted some negative comments about Roy, and at the time I felt they were justified. Has he got the best out of our squad? Who knows. But you look back now on his record and and god what a great job he has done. We haven’t got many legends at Palace but we’ve got a few and I think he deserves that accolade.

It is possible to be critical of someone's actions and decisions on occasions but to still hold them in high esteem. Roy has conducted himself with dignity and decency throughout his tenure at Palace and obviously has a close affinity with the club. Roy's approach to managing us has always been pragmatic and if at times our performances have not been very pretty it has, in the end, been effective, and he has preserved our place amongst the elite for 4 years, and, over the last couple of seasons, has done so with something to spare.

He has done a sensational job. Taken us from being a ticking time bomb waiting to go down. To a well respected and established Premier League club. All on a budget of next to nothing and he has conducted himself with the utmost class throughout. The period he has had at the club was absolutely vital. And he is one of our best ever managers. Thank you, Roy.

They say timing is everything and this is perfect timing. Roy has been so influential over the four years and has brought so much knowledge and experience in football matters to the club and at the same time keeping us in the league each year. The crossroads have arrived . What the future holds nobody knows but but Roy’s legacy will surely stand us in good stead. Thanks for everything Roy and all the best for the future. COYP
