I enjoy both CD and Vinyl and play via valve amps. Vinyl is obviously dependent on the record surface but for high quality you need a good phono stage either mc or mm and a good cartridge. Some one said about inner grooves being compressed, that is not the case, most people use a 9" arm that cannot correctly track inner grooves which is why serious individuals use 12" arms to counteract that effect.

It's one of those collectors passions I'd say. The covers, the physical act of 'putting on a record', that forms an escape from digital life. It's nice that it's made something of a comeback and does or rather can add an element to the experience of listening to music and being into a band.

My vinyl collection started in 1972 with T-Rex Metal Guru on 7", which I still have, and continued through to the early 80's until I married and sold loads off. For the past 10 years I've been recouping what I sold and adding more. I currently have over 2000 albums, 300 singles, over 200 12" singles and 8 10" singles and still adding. I have only listed 1,516 of my albums on discogs so far and they value what I have as:- Min = £7,472.07, Median = £15.692.75 & Max = £35,430.232. I still buy but not the new re-pressings as I prefer the originals from the 70's until the 90's. Here's my wall of vinyl that the the wife ain't too pleased with as it pushed her books off the shelf Edited by Deleagle (04 Oct 2021 8.09pm) Attachment: 20211004_195529.jpg (3,639.58Kb)

How many of the records do you play....hopefully no Des O'Conno or Max Bygraves! Agree with your comment about original recordings. Current stuff not so good.

Current stuff not so good. I play all of my records, there's no point in having them otherwise, and definitely no Des or Max I also have almost 800 cds, over 180 cassettes, and not to forget all the mp3's from staffie and mr.apollo and all are played from time to time. Music centre... you do not hear that term anymore, I use to have a Ferguson ( what ever happened to them). I bet your Sanyo has given loads of pleasure and great value for money. Your collection is obviously worth a lot, I sometimes look at old record shops or ebay and I am amazed at the prices compared with a few years back!

Do any of you well informed people know if old 78 vinyl records are of any value? They are still in their brown sleeves. Maybe thirties, forties and fifties records.

Despite their age, 78s generally have little or no value, maybe because of the ability to play them, their fragile nature or possibly because of the sheer volume sold. Go around any antique shop/fair/auction and you will see piles of the damned things. I still hold on to the ones left me by my uncle back in the 70s in the vain hope that they become valuable.

78s don't fetch big money unless they're exceptionally rare. An Elvis on the Sun label, Blue Moon of Kentucky, sold for £916 a few days ago. Dad bought Elvis singing All Shook Up on 78 and I broke it. Silly me. I have a few, including Henry Hall (Born in Peckham) and his Gleneagles Orchestra, which, even the hotel didn't want to buy. Have a look at this site if you want to check the value of yours: [Link]
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
