Goldberg was far from being an idiot, having stars in his eyes and being eaten by football sharks, yes. He made back all the money he lost at Palace, he made it from those late night women in various states of undress on TV getting people to call in on premium phone lines. Mark was well known in Bromley at the time. My firm shared an office building with MSB In Elmfield Road and MSB were flying. All his salesmen had fancy cars, all the secretaries looked like Sam Fox and they would have massive piss ups in the office on Friday's and we'd see them later on in Bibas or Jazzmins legless.
Following Palace since 25 Feb 1978 |

Yes, a mate of mine worked for MSB...very ' Wolf of Elmfield Road ' ! Goldberg also did well as manager at Bromley football club for a while.

Some excellent posts on here about Uncle Ron. Unfortunately, in the early 90s I got the distinct impression that he was using the club as his own personal bank account and was taking the supporters for "mugs". The posts on the sale to Mark Goldberg and the freehold of the ground sum Ron up for me, I'm sad to say. We had some brilliant times with Coppell in charge and the year we finished third in the old First Division was the time to invest. If we had just purchased one or two quality players that summer, who knows what might have happened? Unfortunately the club and Ron did nothing (no change there) and two years later we were relegated!

When he bought the club for a penny we were in dire straights. He gave Steve Coppell his chance, but we languished at the bottom of the then second division.
He started “ Lifeline” which where the fans could contribute to the purchasing of players. We bought Gary O’Reilly and Mark Bright. I joined and I think it was one of my favourite times of watching Palace. For that is how I would remember Ron Noades, sure he had an edge to him and said some controversial things, but he was a Palace fan as well as a business man,and that is how he should be remembered. Ron Noades was always a Wimbledon fan and never made any secret of that fact.

Ron Noades professed to love Palace and yet he allowed Goldberg's gullability and eagerness let him pay way over the odds for the club.

Its mentioned in books and interviews that the summer we finished third the senior players approached Coppell and asked him to speak to RN about investment. They all believed that with just a couple of quality additions we could actually challenge for the title. Something that would have put us on the map and probably never looked back from. But Noades flatly refused and actually lined his pockets by selling a couple of players.

My understanding is that Noades was informed that CPFC was valued at £18 Mill but to sell £10 Mill of shares making the total value £28 Mill In terms of 'Selhurst Park', Noades never set out to own the ground after he sold the club.He offered a package on a 5 year deal but this never came to fruition so Noades retained ownership of the ground. This was some time ago and my memory is not what it used to be in my pomp but this is my recollection of events.

What you outline is broadly my recollection Willo. By the way, I loved the video - don't recall ever seeing that before. What is in no doubt is that between himself and Steve Coppell, CPFC were totally transformed and some very exciting times unfolded. I also seem to recall that the players involved at that time, as well as Coppell himself, spoke incredibly fondly of Noades both as a Chairman but also as a human being.

We spent all that and more on Gabbiadini, Coleman and Mortimer.

Yes, one of the reasons Wright wanted to go. Plus it is a myth that we spent ALL of the Wright money on Gabiadini. The vast majority of that transfer was add onns that only kicked in after a certain amount of appearances/goals/etc. In reality we never paid half what was reported.
