Ah go after the employment history of a hard working immigrant & were not discussing SW7 are we.
There was 1136 crimes reported in Croydon (within 1 mile of my old address) for just last month this is appalling.
Do we not count as your average Croydon residents? I guess some are more average than others.
I have had a knife pulled on me twice, once because I glanced briefly at some bellend's missus & secondly just a gang of feral youths as I was walking past them pulled a knife out quite obviously to intimidate me as I walked past.

My mums house (again West Croydon) had the door kicked in whilst a gang of black men helped themselves to whatever they wanted, one held a machete to my mums throat damn near severing her thumb, my brother at the time was also living there he was also robbed, in a sweet twist of fate about a year ago a man got murdered in Croydon it turned out the one that got murdered is the one that held a machete to my mums throat.
My Nephew a resident of West Croydon had a gun pulled on him in old town and was forced to hand over his wallet.
You should take a walk down the alleyway system from Waddon Marsh tram stop to the housing estate it connects to, its an eye opener as to the amount of fly tipping and dumping of s*** that goes on there, the council would come along scoop up the mattresses and old sofa's once a month and its usually hours before it starts to fill up with peoples s*** again, the biggest irony is the dump site that is literally a 5 minute walk away.

Pay backs a bitch

I used to drink at the Windmill - Genuinely good curry there, I believe the motorcycle shop opposite was robbed a couple of years back.
Fyi 1384 crimes were reported within 1 mile of the Windmill - worse than where I lived, its literally happening all around you fella.

Well, Owen did work in Hong Kong you know. Maybe he had bad experience with Kowloon City District Council.

Ah, I used to love the Directors there.

InMoto is doing fantastically well there. Don’t know about Classic Runners and Maverick but they all survive.

So SW19, you must be close to me and the East LA Massive.

Dan, beware of pickpockets in Old Town. Much as I like Bratislava it’s too small for me. I was always happy to get back to Croydon.

Over the last 6 months or so been weighing up some options about how our future pans out and one of the potential, and it is still very much sketched out on the back of an envelope thinking, is maybe selling up in London and using part of the money to buy a small place up in Seaburn, which is a suburb of Sunderland. Lovely stretch of coast line, good links into Newcastle, in short nowhere near as bad as people make out.

Now it probably will not happen that way but even so, I was surprised at how nice it looks up there. I want to spend a lot more time abroad but want to keep a foothold in the UK and there are worse places than the NE coast.

Give me that over most of Croydon north of the flyover now.

You’ve been watching Vera haven’t you pet. You do know she comes from Ramsgate.

nearly 40 reported crimes happening literally all around you a day and your reaction is to hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil.
I was also living in Croydon as recent as 2 years ago.

The last para was obviously not aimed at you. But certainly at several others

I’m fully aware of the crime rate in the borough, and in the locality. Does it concern me? No. I’m aware that if I choose to live in most parts of this city I am never going to be far away from comparible crime rates.

My point is this - I could buy a 2m property in South Ken and still have higher local crime rates than where I am now.

Violent crime is higher than a lot of other boroughs but on the whole it is gang driven in fighting. I’m not saying that’s acceptable but the likelihood of me getting caught up in it is low. I can say this from experience, regularly walking home late at night from the town centre back to CR0 for years with no problems whatsoever.

Would I be comfortable letting my kids walk back on their own at certain times? No. Would I be comfortable doing that elsewhere on London? Also no. It’s not just a Croydon issue - if you choose to live in a city you have to be realistic about risk. But what it does not mean is that you get so so paranoid that you may as well never step outside your front door.

I live 4 1/2 hours away from Bratislava in the Low Tatra mountains, I step outside my front door can walk for 10 minutes and be right in the middle of a forest, not bumped into any bears yet but honestly the best decision I ever made was coming here.

Bratislava its an odd place, only problems ive had is with Gypsies begging there but I have noticed the Policia move them a bit more frequent now.

If we’re being pedantic about stats, I have it as 1140 for my postcode. But even if it was higher, it’s essentially the same as south Ken. I live in a city. If you want low crime rates, you don’t move to London.

The windmill (probably the ropiest looking pub in the area, apart from maybe the orchard) is about 5 mins walk away, yes.

Again, you’re mentioning these stats like it should surprise me, or like I’m walking around oblivious... it’s not the case. It’s just you’re experiences, as terrible as they are, are the exception not the rule. If that happened to every resident the crime rate would be about 100 times that.

Plasters ain't what they used to be. Shame; and I do hope he saw his life slipping away without being able to do anything.
Like in the equaliser.

Got to say that sounds nice. But could I cope without the constant sound of helicopters and sirens. The silence would probably drive me quite.... mad.

South Kensington? I’m pretty sure I could find multiple areas in London that are worse than where he lived, which incidentally is the same (CR0) postcode as where I live. It’s perfectly understandable to develop confirmation bias, especially in this case, but as always it does not equate to reality. Obviously this goes on a lot but does it mean it’s the average experience across the borough? No. Absolutely not.

It also never ceases to amaze me the amount of people on here who don’t actually live in Croydon, making consistently negative comments that are often not based on actual, day to day experience.

For clarification, I meant it was like Palace boasting about being better than Sunderland.

I grew up around that way and my parents still live there. I worked in off licenses for a few years and that was a real eye opener to just how much crime their was.

Whilst it is the nicer area of Croydon, there's still a lot of crime. I remember my friends visiting and being shocked about the black sheep's finger print scanner, or the metal detector for mucluskies.

There was a kid getting murdened on a night bus on gravel hill a few years back for no reason at all. Shrubland's made national news a couple of years ago when that refugee was beat up outside the goat.

If your in the right demographic, you won't see that much crime, but it's there and its pretty constant and getting worse, whilst all the bars and shops that were its saving grace are shutting down.
