I never wanted VAR and for the most part (except when penalties are overturned for diving and red cards are given for off the ball incidents which refs have missed) I hate having it, but wasn't the ref the problem in that game rather than VAR?

I wasn't watching the game for first half but had the ref not blown whistle early then surely Barnes goal would've stood.
Didn't think Pope challenge was a foul but did ref give penalty or did VAR?

Yes, you’re right, the referee made some very poor decisions. He awarded the penalty for a foul on Bamford when Pope had clearly taken the ball however when VAR checked the decision, the decision was allowed to remain.

Secondly, and even worse, was the foul adjudged to have been committed by Ben Mee. Never in a million years was it a foul by Mee and furthermore it WAS a foul by the Leeds goalkeeper, with a leading knee planted in the back of Mee before he spilled the ball. The referee blew too early yes, however VAR should have checked the penalty incident on Mee and it didn’t. An absolute shocker!

I would post a link but the web is awash with articles this morning. MOTD also heavily criticised both the VAR decisions and the referees performance.

Handball rule changed as football's law makers Ifab confirms new accidental ruling - [Link]

Looks like the handball laws will be updated in July. Will hopefully be clearer to us all.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

It will remain a handball offence if a player scores accidentally with their hand or arm, or uses their hand or arm directly before scoring.

So it is a partial climb-down

As RH says, handball should be deliberate.

If we had not had this constant meddling in recent years, and not had VAR at all, I submit we would be much better off.

VAR just provides the detailed evidence for the officials to adjudicate according to the latest handball rulings, which I accept have been a few in recent seasons.

Hopefully it is just that they cannot admit to being plain wrong, and this is a stop on the route back to deliberate handball.

Or knowing football and the way it is governed, less clear. This now becomes subjective which inevitably leads to big club bias.

I wholeheartedly agree.

What with our current anti-football and the excitement nullifying VAR, I’m likely to watch lower league and non league games once crowds can return.

I’ll still renew mine and my sons season ticket, to support the club, but I’m not subjecting him to the s***e served up at home against the likes of Brighton, Newcastle, Liverpool, Burnley and Fulham...especially when VAR then destroys any of the excitement were we to actually score a goal, as it searches for 2 minutes to find a way of disallowing it.

Scott Parker, makes a good point when he says, we should not be trying to make obscure situations in the game , perfect.
In some ways it’s , related to the PC world we live in now, in so much as every action is put under a microscope , for the imperfections .
It sanitises every situation to the point of becoming boring.
He thinks it will kill the game in time. I think it has killed some of the mystery in the game already. And it certainly along side of some bizarre changes of rules, is slowly turning football at the highest level into a ,” blow out”, for anoraks.
Thank god the kids can still play the game as it was meant to be played with all its marginal decision left to the man in the middle.

Last night's latest VAR faux-pas really takes the biscuit.

The VAR match centre said: "The on-field referee felt that Alex McCarthy got a slight touch on the ball, and VAR couldn't see anything to disprove that."

If it can't do that, what possible use is it?
