As you said, practice as you preach. As I say, when lifestyles or enjoyment are at stake, people would rather not. When they can put their rubbish in a different bin then they may or do do that.

I’d suggest the obtuse ones are the ones who tie themselves in knots rather than accept that this generation does something better than they did. I’m aware of hundreds, yes hundreds of cars trying to pick up kids at Riddlesdown school in sanderstead and Woodcote school in Coulsdon. The traffic isn’t a problem on the main roads at riddlesdown but it is at woodcote. These are comprehensive schools with teenagers, and the size of the schools hasn’t increased that much. Go back a couple of decades and you’d get a few dozen parents picking up their teenagers and you used to get kids mocked or embarrassed by this. I don’t necessarily blame the kids only but the parents also. This is teenagers. Multiply the problem with primary schools where often and obviously parents live closer. Tbh I only expect a parent to drive to pick a child up if it’s at a private school because they can often travel a long way with difficulty getting their with bus or train changes. Unbelievable you think there hasn’t been a huge increase in parents driving kids to and from school from 4 to 16. Do they do it when they’re in 6th form as well? How about university in Surrey as well?

Because that's where the UN conference is taking place. And I guess partly because Trump is a vocal opponent of climate change. That said - she winds me up and undoubtedly is being feted by politicians from around the world to jump on a bandwagon - but the fact that she (or her backers if you prefer) have created a movement cannot be denied and if it helps in the short or long term, then all well and good. I meant more as a target (in the USA) let her & her backers try this in Kolkatta or Beijing or Riyaddh.

If the US wants to continue to be seen as a world leader, you have to take responsibility and lead by example. I'm sure it's an uncomfortable truth and doesn't fit the populist agenda of your leaders but these are the facts.

How about university in Surrey as well? You can look at this another way. Kids in London get free bus passes. Where I am we see them seemingly unable to walk anywhere, waiting 10 mins for a bus to take them a five minute walk down the road. Back in the day I walked to school then for secondary had a 15 min walk to the Pond then a bus then a walk at the other end. And these days there is no concept of an orderly queue, more a fight for the doors!

How are these 'vague' generalisations? I'd say it's a pretty accurate generationisation. Which climate change protesting youngsters refuse car travel or holidays or the use of their phones? Can you point to examples to refute it? Edited by Stirlingsays (24 Sep 2019 2.49pm)

Out of interest does Sweden fine parents for taking their kids out of school during term time?
