Genders are social constructs. As with most intangibles they are open to subjectivity and really not that much use in terms of hard science. If people want to see themselves as milk cartons that's up to them. However, most people are happy with small variations upon the masculine or feminine in line with their sex. There are two biological sexes, situations like intersex is not a different sex but a genetic variation bestowed upon a tiny number of people and hence not a third sex as some suggest.

Having spent quite a lot of time in SE Asia I can assure you that there are many people there who might be generally physically male but also show female characteristics and psychologically are most certainly female. [Link] Sir Tim Hunt's comments were inappropriate in whatever context you place them but he reigned his post when that was pointed out to him. He was though defended by many of his peers so it all looks a little unfortunate and heavy handed. People don't always make good decisions.

Disingenuous lefty says, 'I have never known a real scientist lose their job for expressing an unpopular opinion'. Is shown situations where that is what happened....of which was just a small set of examples. Response....excuse, excuse excuse. Wikipedia is mainly edited by left wingers.....The Guardian is a left wing publication and the BBC...ha, the link didn't work. As for 'resigning'.....just another example of disingenuous commentary....people are obviously given that option before being sacked.....without the actions taken against them for their opinions they wouldn't have 'resigned'. That’s still only a concept. Biologically everybody is predominantly either male or female.
