We do need to stand up to China however we also should not mislead the citizens of Hong Kong. We could not possibly accept 300,000 refugees all at once so we need to make it clear that if it comes to that there will have to be some sort of restrictions or a phased timetable.

I don't think you'd end up with many refuges. What you would get is some protection from unfair treatment from the British Consulate which would make things more difficult for China. Was more pointing out about the wild ideas that were floating around some months ago about bio weapons and Chinese interference with social media.

i was listening to a radio discussion yesterday, which raised a couple of points. Why can't the UK renew the lease on HK to try and reinstate its previous incarnation ? This was countered by the fact China will not seek to reduce its land mass. Look at the island-grabbing around the Pacific and areas like Taiwan and Kashmir. China is seeking to expand. And Asian culture, and specifically China, can be considered quite brutal, compared to western attitudes. If China wants something, then it's pointless negotiating. Unless you are willing to use military-style force to resist, then quite frankly the outcome is inevitable. I disengage, I turn the page.

Why can't the UK renew the lease on HK to try and reinstate its previous incarnation ?
This was countered by the fact China will not seek to reduce its land mass. Look at the island-grabbing around the Pacific and areas like Taiwan and Kashmir. China is seeking to expand.

And Asian culture, and specifically China, can be considered quite brutal, compared to western attitudes. If China wants something, then it's pointless negotiating.
Unless you are willing to use military-style force to resist, then quite frankly the outcome is inevitable.
