It’s a strange one really, I see younger fans from both sides claiming to hate us or we hate them, why? They weren’t even born when it was rife in the 70’s/early 80’s It’s because it’s the done thing!! Football fans have to have a rival, someone to hate. I hate Brighton, but not this Brighton, the Brighton of the late 70’s/early 80’s horrible nasty pieces of s*** on the pitch like Brian Horton, Steve Foster and Peter Ward. Travelling down to the goldstone two Christmas’s on the trot to see us get beat, them beating us 0-3 at selhurst when we went down!! That C*** Mullery. Proper mass brawls, that as a kid and a coward I had to run the gauntlet and try to avoid. This Brighton I couldn’t care less about really, I want them to lose and I want them to go down, but only because I’m a palace fan, therefore I have to hate Brighton. I went to those Christmas games, seem to remember a lot of snow around for one of them.

I spent 15 years living in Brighton, so the rivalry for me comes from personal experience of constant banter. When we beat Brighton in the play-offs I was actually working for Amex. I wanted to go in like a 10-year-old kid in a full replica kit and run around the offices, but as I actually had a kid to feed I thought better of it. The season the Amex opened Poyet came in to talk to the media from the staff canteen. I remember he p*ssed people off because he essentially alluded to the fact the job was a stepping stone (oh Gus, where are you now!!) I was also constantly being offered free tickets, but I could not see myself enjoying sitting in the home end and they wouldn't give me tickets for the away end (I did ask!), so I always refused. Fortunately I'd emigrated by the time they got promoted

Fulham? I hate them. Ever since Johnny Haynes ignored my request for an autograph in 1960 I have nursed a pathological burning hatred of them. When they were promoted I asked for counselling to deal with my Liam Neeson type feelings. Since we trounced them I have been floating on air, thinking of all those millions going down the drain. Armaggedon would be Fulham staying up, I think you might need help

I guess a lot depends on age ...I am of a age where I saw games against the weed home and away at the Gallstone back in the day and they was quite hostile to be honest and the games could be quite feisty. Both sets of fans were quite game and I was in and witnessed a few good scraps to be honest ( Mainly lashing out in self defense I might add ). The lack of playing them for years and there sorry demise to playing at a Athletics track took the edge off the hatred a bit as they was a joke of a club for many years and out of our spotlight ....The new Brighton still feels me with disgust and even going to Brighton as a place and seeing t***s in their shirts riles me but I see them now as just a small seaside club with fluffy little fans who maybe have adopted them while their other club is too far away to support . Never took to Birmingham much after they beat the s*** out of us in the Mid eighties after coming to Selhurst in numbers . Millwall and Charlton are still there in principle I guess but again don't play them enough now to care really and as for Watford I couldn't give a rats arse about them ....Sure they see us more of a rival as no one else really cares about them so they create this pretend rivalry ...but again maybe the younger ones have created this along other teams over the last few seasons .

Got to agree about Birmingham fans. They owe me a car wing mirror. Funny really, Villa and Baggies fans are fine.

Was that the relegation party, just after Hillsborough?
