You clearly can’t have seen him play much for Palace (if at all) and please don’t rely on Willopedia...you need to extend your research a little further to the team sheets of the 1996/1997 years, or watch the season reviews on video or DVD.

Muscat was a fullback! Right footed and predominantly Right sided, however he did play games for us in the Number 3 shirt when Marc Edworthy was fit and holding down the right back spot.

Muscat was with us when we had Andy Roberts, David Tuttle, Andy Linighan and Herman Hreidarsson playing at Centreback. You know...I’m sure you’ll remember Andy Roberts dropping back from midfield to play at centreback alongside Tuttle once his legs had lost that bit of pace...No?!?!

There’s a theme developing in a lot of your posts and the bollox you’re writing about Muscat playing at centre back for Palace as opposed to fullback, just re-inforces it!

I remember him playing centre back for Millwall.

He was a centre back, and not a very good one: [Link]

He was a centre back. This is a fact.

As a point of reference, please search his statistics and those of actual Right Back Marc Edworthy on this very site and compare the amount of games they both played in the same season for us.

They couldn't both have been playing the same position.

Muscat only ever played as a right back or left back for Palace. Marc Edworthy and Dean Gordon were both at the club when he was and he was a back up player when one of those was injured. If he played centre back it may have been the odd game but the only Aussie centre back we had was Craig Moore and then Tony Popovic

He was a centre back, whether he got shoe horned into left back or right back covering the occasional game or not.

Scott Dann played up top for us on occasion when the clock was ticking and Danny Butterfield scored a hat trick, does that make them centre forwards?

Back on topic:

Assuming this websites statistics are wrong and he played RB the same season as Edworthy managed to 53 times, is he one of the greatest palace right backs of all time then or not?

Well I was going to nearly every game home and away at that time and thinking back now he did play some games at centre back in a back 3 which Harry Bassett deployed from time to time. He was crap in that position and was ok at full back but I would confidentely say he played more at full back than he did centre back and when he left us to go to Wolves he was a fullback there too as we swapped him for Jamie Smith.

Muscat left his Mrs and is living in Australia with a girl I know from Beckenham/Penge. Sure he was a right back. Piss head now apparently.

Remember reading somewhere that he was nearly arrested by the police at a match once when he was playing for Wolves as the tackle was so bad it could have been classed as GBH. Wolves V Forest was the match.

Got sent off for Palace at Norwich for a horror tackle. Bloke was an animal no wonder he ended up at Millwall

To think we had two complete thugs in him and Mark Dennis (left back) - was it at the same time - can't remember?
Anyway Wan B is the best Right Back I have seen play for us and I go back a while!

Mark Dennis, even worse. Dennis was such a liability we gave up on him as I recall. He was long before Muscat.

Yes AWB is very promising but its rare hes crosses and he did brilliantly when Townsend hit the post with header at Man City. He relys too much on link up with Townsend. I want him to gamble going forward. Hes improving but I want more that great tackles which give away throws on... plus he needs to practice throws ons!!
As for Ward, nice one, if only he had that extra yard of pace at his peak.. when we played Spurs FAC, he did really well. So great we have two excellent right backs at the club right now!!

I still feel Joel Ward's contribution over his time at Palace is still under rated. AWB has the pace to get himself out of trouble but his distribution, although improving, is not at the same level as Ward's. Wards pass to Schlupp that lead to the opening goal against Spurs shows his great awareness he has when going forward. Extremely reliable and I think whoever played in front of him always benefitted from his astute distribution particularly Wilf and Bolaise. Defensively very strong and if had a bit more pace he would have also not looked out of place in the England team.
