We took a gamble. We got Benteke, we overpaid, the 1st season he scored 15. If he did in the 2nd season too we would have ended up 7th or 8th, instead he scored 3, who would have thought that? It was a gamble, and it backfired. The same could be said for other players.
There's not much to guess or investigate... when his (and wickham and Sakho etc...) contract expires (we cannot hope someone buy them) we will be able to deal in the market again, not buts no ifs. That's the situation.
We are not short of money, we gambled all our budget on the wrong horses, and it backfired.

Well with no evidence that it's more than your wet dream there isn't much point in worrying about a hypothetical scenario.

I don't think we took a gamble, we paid pretty much the going rate for a proven scorer, and he delivered the first year and kept us up. As far as I'm concerned he earned the fee right there.
The other strikers we were supposedly hard in for were Slimani and Batshuayi --who were both flops that year and continue to struggle and were both punted from the Prem teams that signed them. If we had bought one of them instead, good chance we would have been relegated without 15 goals from a striker.

No end product for Tekkers last year, which sucked, but he still had good hold-up play and created loads of space for Wilf and Townsend. I don't think it's a coincidence that Wilf has had one goal since Tekkers got injured.

We're a mid-table, mid-budget team so at best we can afford a 2-3 pricey players (which today means 20M+), maybe 8 starters at market rate (10-15M) and the rest need to be academy, reclamation projects or unproven from abroad. AWB is found money, and Zaha was a great reclamation project, but those are hard to come by.

Sakho has been worth the money in my book, so I don't get your point on him. We're also always going to get some injuries, so it's hard to plan/budget for Wickham/Dann/Soure going out long term.

Shipping out players has created some room, so I see summer as the time to reset. Only Kelly, Soure and Speroni are out of contract, so the starting line up (which in my opinion is strong when healthy) is a good starting point.

No a wet dream at all certainly don’t want Palace to go into admin. Was just posing a question that was all

I don't think it is an excuse and it's not about SP not wanting to put his hand in his pocket it's more him not wanting to financially cripple us. Yes you can argue some of his transfer dealings have put us here but hopefully this is a sign he's putting an end to those bad transfers. There was that report last year showing how Palace are the highest in the league in %turnover (around 79% I think!) spent on wages. That's just not feasible long term.

[Link]

A look out our subs bench the other day highlights our huge problem (only 1 maybe 2 of whom realistically stand a chance of getting into the starting 11 when everyone is fit.)

Some of subs bench against Liverpool with approx rumoured/reported wages:
Benteke 100k plus
Wickham 50k plus
Schlupp 50k plus
Meyer 80k plus
Dann didn't he sign an 80k extention?
Kelly 40k plus

Now I think it shows we do have a decent squad and one I believe can stay up but we certainly can't continue to add more big wages onto it. Hence the transfer inactivity and seemingly large clearout.

I think in the summer there'll be more departures if we can find a buyer (i.e Dann). Not because the players are bad but because we can no longer justify 50k plus for bench warmers. And as others have mentioned I hope we do start replicating Bournemouth's model of costly league players with potential but crucially on much lower wages and potential big sell on.

I do think there'll be some movement before the end of the window but I'll be happy if it's just a loan or young player and hope that we can avoid injuries and Benteke/Wickham can start finding the net. Both could be a big ask but I'll take it over getting more panic buys in which is why we're in this position.

How would he cripple us by giving the club a nice loan like other clubs owners do it wouldn't he wants to take out not put in which is what he is doing with all these little companies he has linked to Palace.

those wages figures are guesses you go on different sites and they provide different figures no way is Scott Dann on a base wage of 80k

We don't have a descent squad we have a good starting 11 only.

Can't get rid of many more and the ones that have gone was down to their contracts was up in summer anyway.

You need to learn what the rate is for players and why are you claiming Dann is a bench warmer that guy has not been back long from long term injury and had served this club well.

Bournemouth the team which has been fined multi times for breaching FFP as your example ok

Wickham has never been a goal scorer do people on here even know anything about player or the sport it doesn't appear so due to so much wrong info.

Revenues are irrelevant after all Carillion had revenues in excess of £5 billion

It’s just as well then that they were not building our stand at the time of their collapse as I could see the new stand being finished on with a couple of gazebos and some Gorilla tape from B&Q

When they need someone to take the old stand down they should employ the bloke who demolished the new hotel because they owed him £600. Top class wrecking.

FFP wise we are in big trouble. However with the fat trimming we have already done and Wilf and Sakho highly likely to go it looks like this could be managed in the summer.

rubbish dont know why people kept using ffp as excuse SP himself has even let slip by mistake it's not an issue.

if both those go it is nothing to do with our current money status or cleaning out it will be due to they offers are too good or the players want to leave.

Lack of ambition. Happy to just stay up each year. We will get caught out one year, like Stoke, West Brom, Sunderland or Villa. Happy to go back to the Championship - Saturday afternoon football, no tourist fans, academy players coming through, no s*** refs with big team bias and we will start playing football again instead of defending deep and hoping to nick one on the break. We have scored more goals at the Etihad and Anfield than we have at home all season. Looks like Parish agrees that we will be better off out of the Prem.

Or an alternative spin. Too much ambition too early. Swapping out Murray for Benteke was overly ambitious and cost us in the long term due to Pardew arrogance and inflated ambition. And we’re paying now

I actually think the current depth shedding shows ambition. I’d rather get rid of 4 Mutch’s in order to buy one good player rather than keeping 4 Mutches on the roster.
