It's amazing that this has dropped so far out of the daily news cycle considering how far the violence has escalated. As far as I can make out from the little I can garner (mainly podcasts) There is now a police crackdown with wide spread use of baton rounds, water cannon, mace and tear gas and freely wielded batons in an attempt by the state to put down an open revolt in a neighboring country. Then of course there is the attempted bank run.

is there some form of reporting restriction in place or are the media self censoring? I've seen a couple of politically focused articles on the BBC but nothing really focused on what's going on in the streets.

How is this not newsworthy?

Spot on. You can imagine the wall-to-wall coverage by the media if this was happening in the USA! The pro-EU mainstream media are desperate to play this down, especially as Macron is their liberal darling.

I would think there is a news clamp-down by now in France, not hearing anything are we.

I think the biggest problem the 'Yellow Vests' have is their name.

The Nazi's had the 'Brown Shirts' which sounds way more menacing. You wouldn't mess with a Brown Shirt, but a Yellow Vest? its like being in the Red Hand Gang.

Or the dead hand gang

This is clearly a UK Government sponsored news blackout.
They are petrified that we will get the same idea.
Look at how the London riots got out of hand a few years ago and that was just mainly the black community, the Police lost control for at least a day.
With Brexit being undeliverable as well don't be surprised to see the same thing here, we are not as quick to protest but as someone mentioned the Poll tax riots did achieve their objective, the authorities have made an active choice to limit coverage of the French situation.
They always do this of course to some extent with protests but it is particularly noticeable this time.
