The problem is for a chunk of our last period in the Championship we were either struggling to stay in it or mid-table and playing pretty average football (sometimes really scrappy), with average players. It's not as if our better players would stay if we got relegated. I remember one game in particular when we lost 0-3 to Forest at home and I think we barely registered a shot on goal.

Alas this is all part of being a Palace fan. Most of the time it's average, a lot of the time it's crap, but we have occasional flashes of brilliance that keeps everyone believing, or at least turning up most weeks with a glimmer of hope.

The thing that marks Palace out is our demographic, there is a hard core of about 15000 fans but a massive fair weather support that not that long ago gave us crowds of 40,000 plus fairly regularly, every time we played a big London derby or played Man U or Liverpool, so the possibility to go from lower league team (which we were right up to the mid sixties) to

Not apathetic, angry that yet again we're being put through the miserable grind of a relegation battle with s***e football. Make me feel like a mug for gushing over them last season and saying how good they are and how we could get 50 pts and top 8 if lucky. TBH this s*** gets depressing and none of this "we were s*** 30 years ago so suck it up" will make me delude myself into thinking we'll be last season's Palace any time soon it's a rotten cycle that only ends one way Think you should change your user name

Most thought the likes of Stoke, WBA and Swansea were established mid table teams. The reality is that everyone, apart from the elite are in the mix for relegation. Last season Burnley out performed , this year back to reality. This year Watford Out-perform and next they will be in the mix again. As for Palace I am just waiting for the season of out performance (excluding 1990/1 of course).

unfortunately for clubs like Palace there is nowhere else to go once you have reached this stage: they have achieved all they can achieve for the size of the club. The novelty of being in the premier league has worn off for a lot of fans and finishing 15th or 16th is no longer considered an achievement. Unfortunately you either have to be happy with winning 5 or 6 games at home every year or hope the club goes down to the championship where the football is far more competitive (and arguably entertaining).
