Being solvent and staying the Prem. - is that really it?
Staying solvent I agree with 100% but just clinging on in the Prem. - hmmm.
I sort of feel like a few good seasons in the Championship would be more exciting to be honest.
Premiership football is not all it is cracked up to be in my opinion.
Yes - some incredible players who it is a joy to watch - even against us - but most of it is crap and not that exciting.
I must be getting old - hang on - I am old - and grumpy!

The problem is for a chunk of our last period in the Championship we were either struggling to stay in it or mid-table and playing pretty average football (sometimes really scrappy), with average players. It's not as if our better players would stay if we got relegated. I remember one game in particular when we lost 0-3 to Forest at home and I think we barely registered a shot on goal.

You really think the years of T Francis and P Taylor were exciting to watch. You maybe in a minority.

But the club is a completely different animal.
We have rebranded as a successful club with shiney new ground on the way & massive wage bill.
All looks great on paper..
But is like a Porsche built on a beetle chassis.
Looks great but endless disappointment when try to compete.

it was far more recent than 30-40 years that we were serving up dog sh1t football in the Championship utterly rudderless and with a team of players looking like they'd rather be at home watching X Factor with the Mrs.

I don't think we've re-branded at all, still the same old Palace with minor improvements in some areas and glaring short-fallings in others, that have always been there. Alas this is all part of being a Palace fan. Most of the time it's average, a lot of the time it's crap, but we have occasional flashes of brilliance that keeps everyone believing, or at least turning up most weeks with a glimmer of hope.

The thing that marks Palace out is our demographic, there is a hard core of about 15000 fans but a massive fair weather support that not that long ago gave us crowds of 40,000 plus fairly regularly, every time we played a big London derby or played Man U or Liverpool, so the possibility to go from lower league team (which we were right up to the mid sixties) to
established top flight team has always been there - the 'sleeping giant' etc. Owners have always bottled it when we've got in the top flight, but the new stand is a real sign that the commitment to establish our selves as a top flight regular is there - it may takes us another five years before we can say we're a mid table club rather than a relegation battler, and these days there's little difference between the two.

When I think of Palace this season or look at our players I just feel f***ed off. Not apathetic, angry that yet again we're being put through the miserable grind of a relegation battle with s***e football. Make me feel like a mug for gushing over them last season and saying how good they are and how we could get 50 pts and top 8 if lucky. TBH this s*** gets depressing and none of this "we were s*** 30 years ago so suck it up" will make me delude myself into thinking we'll be last season's Palace any time soon

it's a rotten cycle that only ends one way

Think you should change your user name

Indeed. Most thought the likes of Stoke, WBA and Swansea were established mid table teams. The reality is that everyone, apart from the elite are in the mix for relegation. Last season Burnley out performed , this year back to reality. This year Watford Out-perform and next they will be in the mix again. As for Palace I am just waiting for the season of out performance (excluding 1990/1 of course).

You do realise that Ferdinand Porsche created the Beetle in the 1930's and then went on to build the first Porcshes which were souped up race cars on beetle chassis.
They turned out quite well so probably not the best metaphor

unfortunately for clubs like Palace there is nowhere else to go once you have reached this stage: they have achieved all they can achieve for the size of the club. The novelty of being in the premier league has worn off for a lot of fans and finishing 15th or 16th is no longer considered an achievement. Unfortunately you either have to be happy with winning 5 or 6 games at home every year or hope the club goes down to the championship where the football is far more competitive (and arguably entertaining).

Quite a bit of the time under Freedman wasn't much either with his safety first approach.
