If you are lucky enough to have a surround sound system at home play it through that, the trench warfare scenes will really hit home, but whatever, watch !!!! Edited by kayjaybee (07 Nov 2018 5.06pm)

What I find amazing about the First World War is the culture shock that it must have been for the combatants. Imagine (if it's possible) you are an 18 year old in say Bradford. You work at a mundane job, go to church on Sundays and go to the picture house once every couple of weeks. Then you get called up. In a relatively short time you are exposed to shells exploding, mates being slaughtered, mud and the stink of war everywhere. You have little prior visual or sensory knowledge of what to expect, no tele, no computers only word of mouth. It must have been pure hell and the bravery of the ordinary men who went should never be forgotten.

Well put, and some of the voices in the film say they joined up because they thought it was better than the job they had.

Heartbreaking. And the final insult, was on their return to the UK, employers discriminated against former soldiers. Also read Alistair Urquart's "The Forgotten Highlander" to see how things were in WW2. Veterans treatment, was again, abhorrent on their return.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

They did, there is a compelling clip of a new unit being cheered off with brass band flags waving etc. from Leeds. As they get on the train, a hospital train returning from the front pulls up on the opposite platform full of bandaged shattered soldiers.......

One of Corbyn's Momentum mates making a complete fool of himself. Apparently the poppy is racist and the British Legion should be shut down. Racist? Many people of colour have fought for this country with honour and I think even Corbyn has realised that millions more were working class, his people. Thanks to their sacrifice this idiot is allowed to spout his stupid comments. I would remind him that that we fought a second world war against racism. Just another attention seeking idiot. With friends like that Jeremy.....

Disgusting vandalism of a memorial to the many thousands of Sikhs who fought for this country in both world wars. I have no idea who did this but I hope the police catch them and the courts punish them severely.

Powerful stuff, brilliantly edited, I honestly think it should be mandatory viewing in all schools. People often love to put down British culture & constantly ask what is British culture? I would argue things such as the poppy appeal which is unique to us in the world - the fact we bloody mindedly refuse to forget those who have died in service of this country, our ability to laugh when it's easier to cry & our underdog spirit are very much qualities at the very core of our culture,
The mountains are calling & I must go. |

Wow. Just marvelous. I have surround sound at home and the guns and sound effects made WW1 real for the first time. The colorisation and retiming of the films along with the commentary were excellent.
