There is quite a lot to lose, when you think about it. There’s a reason why the academy kids don’t get played often. It’s because they are not yet ready or never will be. Most of our starting matchday squad are current or former internationals. They are no mugs.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not a fan but the alternatives are rubbish and the midfield is way off the quality of last season. Meyer is that good a playmaker - far more achievements in his career compared to RLC - even before he changed positions last year when his club finished second in Germany, and he played until May. But really should fill the Cabaye role. He played last season as a holding midfielder. We should build out midfield around him: that means a like-for-like shape from last season, with Luka or Kouyate next to him. Or have both the big men either side of him in a midfield 3. I'm not sure why Roy has taken to do it but it will have to happen because we have not functioned that well since those first early games. The strikers haven't got a chance at the moment even if they are lacking.

To my eye no amount of juggling with formations will compensate for the chronic lack of quality / flair we seem to have in the final third but would obviously love to be proven wrong. This year looks to me like being a very uncomfortable one.

Hodgson could of easily gone with Kelly or riedewald. I think bisakka got the nod due to under 23s performance and training, it was quite out there that wan bisakka could keep Zaha quiet in training.

I don't like to judge a player too early but I haven't seen anything in his game which looks like he'll make it at this level. I'm getting a Patrick Bamford vibe about him, and he looks less hard-working now than his first game, which is worrying. Way, way too casual.

We do his name is Meyer. I only mentioned formation as a passing point. The lack of quality up front is not a new thing. RLC hardly scored a boatload did he?

This is where people (and probably our scouting department) are getting it wrong. It’s gonna sound a bit silly, but Meyer only played in the holding position last season. He didn’t actually play as a traditional holding midfielder. Not one that could be likened to any holding role we have in our team anyway. He was a “deep lying playmaker” for Schalke last year, and what his strengths were in the holding position are still entirely different to anything Cabaye did for us. And what Roy would require as part of the 2 defensive midfielders he seems to always play with. His job last season was essentially to knit the play together from a deeper position, think Pirlo or Jorginho. But it wasn’t at all to be a tireless or tenacious defensive midfielder (a bit like Cabaye was for us), and actually you’d see the likes of Bentaleb & Goretzka doing a lot more of the defensive work in midfield. He is not a like for like replacement for Cabaye in any sense of the word. They are 2 different players. And that goes without mentioning, despite the fact Cabaye is a huge miss for us and was a key player. I actually think we would’ve still got more out of him had he played higher up more often. Meyers most promising years were as a number 10. That’s when he was forecasted to be one of the very best in the world. And for the way Roy plays, with the personnel we’ve got, we need to have him as the creative force in the side. That will mean being the closest midfielder to Wilf. A bit like we saw when he came on at Watford. As I said previously. I think we have a ready made solution for the “striker problem”. Get Meyer in for RLC and closer to Wilf and things will happen.

Agree with this. All the time I've seen him play, not sure I've seen him make a tackle. I'd play him left with kayoute and Luka as defensive midfielders and townsend right...

Interesting debate mate. I don’t follow German football closely but didn’t Meyer’s career as a no 10 kinda stall? You’re maybe right in that he was more Pirlo style playmaker but that’s what we’re desperately missing - from what I see in our current set up since Cabaye left. How many sideways passes in the Wolves game? No two players are the same so perhaps we’d need a fresh midfield shape for it to work but I see lots of potential in Meyer when he’s had a chance. He should be the first receiver of the ball from defence. Who knows with 2 holding next to him he could the float forward as well. But he can’t do anything on the bench.
