Always the option of offering a new contract after a year if he’s been exceptional and is enjoying playing for Palace. And if he knew big clubs were getting very interested the contract offer would have to be quite creative.

I gave NSC a read. One thread has The Guardian being brilliant as their analysis of BHA has them finishing higher, another dismisses The Guardian reporting that Meyer is on £80k a week. They have way, way more threads about Palace than we have about them. They also have lots of threads about Reading, Bournemouth and other teams they have a problem with (most teams in the league, it seems). Great fun reading. The non football threads are the opposite of here. Whilst political talk on HoL has turned into far right talk, on their it is left wing talk.

This reminds me when back in the day we signed Matt Jansen from Carlisle. A young player wanted by loads of clubs arriving with loads of promise. But this is the situation x100. Hopefully a brilliant signing and also hopefully not the signing which the board decides means they can flog Zaha. (Who it seems has a value which is actually dropping as in the press today Chelski reckon they are paying £30m!

This looks an amazing signing if he turns out to be anywhere near as good as all the hype. Re the wages etc, £170k a week would be about right if all fees/bonuses/ etc are added up over 3 years, means about £26Mio in all (which is less than we've paid for tekkers !) most of which would be amortised over the 3 years so don't see why so many people seem to be getting worried about it. A 22 year old player with German caps for £26Mio ? Yes please. Also we've cleared a lot from our wage bill with Yohan, Sako and chungy going. I'm more worried about Wilf going personally, next Friday can't come soon enough.

That needn’t be a disaster as Bojan started very brightly before being crocked. My gut feeling is that the way this works best for Palace is that he gives us a great season before being moved on quite quickly for a Southampton sized profit. The way he moved out of Schalke makes me a little uneasy and my fear is that this time next year we’re going to be in a want away situation. Be great of course if he comes off and wants to stay but....

Hi, as my username tells I'm German and a Schalke 04 supporter. I' ll try to give you a brief overview about him as a player but also what in the end led to the unpleasant situation with Schalke. First, I want to apologize for any mistakesin my english which could cause counfusion, but I'll try my best
Max Meyer is talented central midfielder, who was educated in the highly regarded Schalke youth academy. After he made his debut for Schalke at a very young age, he was considered to be the next superstar to be brought up by Schalke. He performed very good as an attacking mitfielder with great ball control, passing skills and creativity. That was until the beginning of last year, when Domenico Tedesco became Schalke manager. Afterwards the general manager gave an interview, where he gave this quote by the agent of Meyer during the negotiations: "Christian [Heidel, general manager], first of all we have to make sure that we talk about the same player: I talk about the world class Max Meyer who would be a regular player in every champions league club in europe. If we talk about the same player, then you can make an offer." (sic!). The general manager of Schalke then made an offer for the "very good Bundesliga player", but ot for the world class player. Afterwards, the brother in law of Meyers agent was at a football talkshow saying that Meyer could easily earn 10m per year in the premier league and talking s*** about Schalke. Every football fan in Germany would agree that Meyer ist very talented but also an egoistic, narcisstic guy who suffers on overconfidence and with an agent who is basically an a**hole. However, Meyer is a worth a try as a free signing, I personally wish him all the best at Palace. If you have any further questions regarding the Bundesliga, Meyer or Schalke just let me know.

The media pulls them all apart eventually......I hope this kid has that German swagger and goes on to shove it the faces of his critics. How we got him is beyond me and if he does excel I just hope Zaha is primed to have a great season and they inspire the team to qualify for Europe. I expect Palace to mow down the bottom ten....and more wins versus the top ten where we failed last season. We have a good team and its getting better. Edited by lindzay (04 Aug 2018 1.17am)

Now I have got a question: -Is this article referred to as 'journalism'? And do you really believe the crap which it says?? Just asking because some people mentioned this article in here.
Edited by TheGermanGuy (03 Aug 2018 6.45pm) Thanks GG - a good appraisal without the usual vitriol that often comes with footballing opinions. To answer your question about journalism, the UK has some of the best journalists in the world and there is a thread or two on the HOL discussing the worst of them also. The link you presented was not journalism but a website. Everyone has access to the web and can create and write whatever they choose. Doesn’t mean the writers are either talented or trained / educated, but they have as much right to spout their opinions as any other. Concerning the topic I guess mistakes are made and Palace probably had a good chuckle with Meyer about that - truth is nobody really cares. What is typical is that many Palace fans feel as though our club is tainted by a general view of inferiority, a view we would like to shake. Remaining in the Premier League for many years and reaching the FA Cup Final well never quite relieve us of the tag Crystal “Fcuking” Palace - a club that you’re expecting to beat. Meyer for us represents a move in the right direction. He is an ungrade for us and a potentially excellent signing should Roy hodgson get the best out of him. The media, though, are potentially keen to see Meyer fail and Palace fall apart rather than anything else and the article shows how we are often represented (in part). Good media outlets and proper journalists evaluate the situation at a club by interviewing a Manager or a Player to get firsthand information and knowledge. Sportswitness or others like them rarely bother and they merely rehash twitter or others articles to enable the click bait merry-go-round. It’s part of the British media set up - many ignore it - many like to get riled up. I like to read posts like yours as you’re a fan with knowledge and opinions nformation. Thanks for your post.
So I manage a Workshop which provides a safe learning environment for blokes struggling with PTSD and other mental health issues. Being a Palace fan isn't listed yet. |

Edited by TheGermanGuy (03 Aug 2018 6.45pm) Many thanks for this. It does seem that the problems with Schalke stemmed from the agent, hopefully now he has signed, the agent wont be stirring it.
