Have no fear fairweather I'll take the hit for that! lol...the reason? it makes me smile that they profess not to care and then squabble amongst themselves with the camp that wants to hate regardless and those that are saying its a good deal...i'll get my popcorn and watch the meltdown.

Hi, as my username tells I'm German and a Schalke 04 supporter.

I' ll try to give you a brief overview about him as a player but also what in the end led to the unpleasant situation with Schalke.

First, I want to apologize for any mistakesin my english which could cause counfusion, but I'll try my best

To start: he has a great ball control. This and his fast movements/turns makes it easy to free himself under pressure. Furter, he has a good passing accuracy and creativity.
His weaknesses are a lack of pace, shooting strength and he tends to slow down the attacks by playing too few vertical passes.

Max Meyer is talented central midfielder, who was educated in the highly regarded Schalke youth academy. After he made his debut for Schalke at a very young age, he was considered to be the next superstar to be brought up by Schalke. He performed very good as an attacking mitfielder with great ball control, passing skills and creativity.
Back then we had Raffael (at Gladbach currently) on a loan who performed quite good as well, but the manager decided not to buy Raffael because he didn't want to block Meyers place in the starting XI/squad.
Like I said, Meyer did very good in the beginning and played along Farfan, Draxler, Huntelaar and Raul. However, he couldn't keep this level - what is quite normal for a player his age. He then was often benched as the several changing managers we had were all critizising his commitment in training.
One often had the impression, that he was offended by being benched instead of working even harder to make it back on the field.

That was until the beginning of last year, when Domenico Tedesco became Schalke manager.
Meyer started to show great effort in training and Tedesco rewarded that by playing him as a defensive midfielder. Meyer played that role very good and soon became a regular player.
During the winter break at the end of december, he said in an interview, that he is happy at Schalke and that a contract extension at Schalke ist definitely an option for him. At that time Schalke was in negotioations with Goretzka as well, media says that we offered him up to 10m euros per year.
Goretzka decided to go to Bayern but negotiations with Meyer were still going on.
The agent of Meyer told a newspaper, that two e-mails weren't enough to convince a schalke boy, although everyone knew that there already several talks with the general manager, the agent and meyer himself took place, but without any agreement yet.

Afterwards the general manager gave an interview, where he gave this quote by the agent of Meyer during the negotiations: "Christian [Heidel, general manager], first of all we have to make sure that we talk about the same player: I talk about the world class Max Meyer who would be a regular player in every champions league club in europe. If we talk about the same player, then you can make an offer." (sic!). The general manager of Schalke then made an offer for the "very good Bundesliga player", but ot for the world class player.
It became clear that Meyer wouldn't sign a new contract, but everyone at Schalke was fine with that without any hatred against Meyer.

Afterwards, the brother in law of Meyers agent was at a football talkshow saying that Meyer could easily earn 10m per year in the premier league and talking s*** about Schalke.
After the match against Hamburg about five weeks before the end of the season, Meyer told the manager that he can't motivate himself for Schalke anymore, that's why he was benched in the following games.
Then Meyer started to not even show up in training by stating he's injured. The Schalke staff asked him to do a MRT-Scan, what he refused. As a result of the injury, Meyer wans't in the squad for the following match. When Meyer was asked about the injury, he said that he wasn't injured although it is a fact that he didn't participate in training.
After that happened, Meyer gave an interview that he feels being bullied and that he didn't sign a new contract because he didn't want to play for Schalke anymore as long as Christian Heidel is general Manager. After that, he got suspended for the rest of the season.

Every football fan in Germany would agree that Meyer ist very talented but also an egoistic, narcisstic guy who suffers on overconfidence and with an agent who is basically an a**hole.

However, Meyer is a worth a try as a free signing, I personally wish him all the best at Palace.
