Hennessey TFM, Tomkins, Sakho, PVA Luka, Reidewald, Townsend, Cabaye, McArthur, Benteke I feel that with both Luka and Reidewald in defensive midfield it will nullify Walcott and allow TFM and PVA to get further up the field. Actually this is probably the most likely line up and shape. He could always stick townsend up top if needed.

Very similar to how we started against Newcastle with McCarthur on the wing, can see this being the starting 11.

Seriously? Please tell me that's sarcasm. Not at all. Under a certain managerial style Ward is a solid PL defender. Admittedly he lost his way a bit but under Roy he was playing well again before getting injured.

I didn't say he'd lost his way under Roy; under Roy he's found some form again and is a 'safe' option at full back. I think TFM will be better but I feel his positional sense is questionable....although his speed of recovery helps him out. For me as an attacking force he flatters to deceive - his final ball is often woeful and his decision making is poor. Any way my original point was I think Roy will go with JW ahead of Souare at LB when - in Zaha's absence - I'm assuming not losing will be prioritised in the short term.

I agree but that's not the point. I'm looking at the next few games where Zaha will be out and I assume Roy's plan will be not to get beat rather than field a side that will elevate us to the top 10. I'm just saying you know what you're getting with Ward, he's solid, reliable and he'll do a decent job defensively in a team that's set up not to lose.

A bit of an unfair comparison given that PVA is 27 and has had 3 or so seasons playing in the Premiership already. TFM is 19 and this is his first season playing regularly. Actually against Newcastle he was up and down the wing like PVA and looked pretty similar in terms of contribution.

But TFM has always struck me as more a central defender than a side one. He has a pretty bad relation with the ball in my opinion, sometimes it won't listen to him

TFM and PvA have both been very inconsistent this season with both going from MOTM performances like TFM against Man City and PvA in the last game, to woeful performances (remember PvA in the cup against Bristol City!) PvA is better going forward, but personally I think TFM is a better defender. As to TFM versus Ward I think it depends on the game, when we sit deep Ward is a very capable defender, but he is way too slow these days when we get stretched. He has better positional sense than TFM, but when he makes a mistake he is less able to make a recovery than TFM who is crazily quick. Personally I would play TFM for his pace, as teams seemed to target Ward earlier in the season when they had a quick winger (like Bolasie).

Wanna take a wild stab at who was the first choice RB the one and only season we finished top 10 in the PL? No prizes for guessing... for me, Ward is a highly scapegoated player. Could he be a bit faster? Yeah. But for me he makes up for it as a pretty solid defender as far as full backs go, notice I say as far as full backs go as I think you'd struggle to find any full backs outside of the top 6 who don't have their "eek" moments. You'd struggle to find full backs who are equally good at getting forward and defending anywhere. I actually think the variation between someone like PVA bombing forward on one side and Ward holding position on the other could work well and compliment eachother. Big fan of TFM, but as far as his crossing ability goes, I'm still unconvinced his final position should be RB once he's developed into his prime. Holding DM or a ball playing centre half for me.

Ward seems way too hesitant when it comes up tackling. So many times have I've seen players skip past him because he wouldn't engage or he forgets about them completely and takes a more central position. I'd like to see the stats on how many goals have been conceeded due to his mistakes.
