Please don't tell me that you want to ban the public use of the word monkey.
Can you not see what a slippery slope this is?
Can you not see that people who get easily offended will just find a new thing to get offended by?
It is all about attention seeking.

I agree..you cant ban it it's a name of an animal, it's the 'assocation' as you rightly pointed out that needs addressing.

Completely agree but we need to do that through education...which will simply take time and generations to water down.

Society is already far far more self aware (with regards to racism for example) and what you and I would have uttered as kids no more than 30years ago without thought we wouldn't now, but it will take time.

The one observation i'd make is where should the line be drawn? The issue raised on this thread is about Race which affects millions of people...but we're seeing more and more 'individuals' taking offence for personal and isolated issues that simply affect them and a minuscule number of others, and then calling for society to change in order to accommodate their values/wishes.

We have a lot of individuals speaking out on behalf of their 'race' and others speaking out for somebody elses 'race'. I suspect that they don't really care about monkeys but more about pushing their identity politics power trip.

No intention to ban public use of monkey. We all need to think within the environments in which we find ourselves. Sadly, there are people who will use our word choices at certain times for their own ends. We both know that word choice needs greater care in some environments than others.

You're not wrong there!

This is why Oprah does my f'ing head in...it's all ME ME ME with her no matter how she dresses it up...yes she is a pilanthrapist...but dont for one minute think she's doing it out of the good of her heart...she's a manipulative power hungry individual who'll stop at nothing to get where she wants.

I guess at least Trump is honest about his intentions.

Well, you can't change what is in people's heads however juvenile it is.
I don't think any 'race' is innocent of having stupid thoughts. It goes with being human. What we can do is treat it like it deserves. File it under childish nonsense and remember that we are adults now.

What next? Bananas? David Attenborough? Sigourney Weaver?

You don't ban the monkey you try your hardest to avoid giving the far right any chance of using the advert as a slur by not having the advert.

It's also 'learned' via our upbringing...which is why i think it'll still take a while yet for people to simply get on with one another.

Having said that, and as a positive, less and less of us see 'colour' or 'sexuality' first when making friends and aquaintances...it's certainly a far fairer and accepting society that we live in now on those basis's then it was even 30years ago!

You see I see it the opposite way. The far right would thrive on the perceived antagonism.

If I were Black, which I'm not, I would wear the Monkey with pride and say fcuk you. I wouldn't let some brainless dickhead dictate my behaviour like if I wanted my kid to wear a particular item of clothing.

Easy for me to say maybe.

There is a child modelling agency called ‘Cheeky Monkey Models’. They welcome children of all racial backgrounds.

There is a Cheeky Monkeys out of school club in Chorley. Their promo website features a little black girl.

Are both of these inappropriate? (There are many other examples).

Again, I can certainly see where you're coming from esp when something similar happened with the N word (the fact I'm calling it that says a lot for how we've progressed as well I guess)

I find it interesting how offended the OP is about this whole subject and as such giving this story more coverage than it deserves.

It IS offensive (to some), most likely a deliberate attempt to get press coverage.

However, they've acknowledged their "mistake" and apologised. Nothing left to see here, move on.

It isn't going to stop me from buying clothes from there.

You have no clue (as usual). The modelling session and the copywriters who writer the ad are two completely divorced activities. There's no way the parents could have objected at the time; to them, their son was being photographed for an H&M catalog. It's only much, much later that some idiot decided to use a monkey reference for the ad.

And before you challenge my bona fides on this, my wife used to model for clothing catalogues, so I know from her stories how these things go. The models are treated like props, rushed in / rushed out, and have no say or even clue about how those photos will be used ultimately. Once they're paid for allowing their image to be taken, that image is no longer theirs - it belongs to whoever paid them for it.

Yes,but as a minor he would have had a parent/guardian with him.
I have said it's not very well thought out and a complete balls up by the Ad agency/marketing..who would have had to approve the campaign.
If the parent/guardian deemed it unsuitable then I would have thought they would say so.
Those pictures do not get used untill the marketing department approve them.
So although you are part right, nothing gets used untill final approval of the client company.(I to have a little knowledge of the process.).
